What is the difference between tube and solid state as far as power/durability/reliability/sound/anything else? How do tube amps work? What are the tubes for? Help?

I'll tell you what JD, use the search feature for this website, and read thru the piles of stuff written on tube amps, if you any questions after that, I'll make sure you get an answer, OK?, I'm not trying to put you off, but a small book or two could be written to answer the questions you asked, so give the search a try and come back and we'll hash thru the rest of it...............

Am I the only one who thinks pstrings reply was really patronising and uncalled for?

Ya, it makes sense to search through the site, not much point in re-writing everything thats been said before.

As one of the many people who has 'written small books' in previous replies to similar questions, I find it very hard, (no, impossible!) to just quietly spew it all out again, without comment. In just a few years of existence, this site has accumulated a wealth of detailed explanations from several knowledgeable sources.

Maybe I was in a sour mood myself when I first read pstring's reply, but I remember thinking that it was pretty much exactly what I was thinking.

Give the man full marks for accuracy, and dock him a few for lack of politeness. We're all human here.

pstring's remark was the right call, not uncalled for. People need to learn to use the search engine.

Well maybe I didn't come thru as I intended, but I didn't mean to be impolite or patronizing, and I apoligize if I came off that way, but I didn't want to throw out a two cent answer and didn't have time to give a good explanation to JD52's questions and I know their is alot of information stored up in the archives, I thought if JD skimmed thru it maybe some of his questions would get answered, and then he could get back and post again if he still had any questions or wanted to follow-up on anything, Axl, don't you think the question " How do tube amps work?" requires more than a couple of short sentences?, I think I've given you some fair answers to some of your questions, and I plan on doing the same with JD52...
