humbuckers are 2 single coils 'fused' together to function as a single unit. why the trouble? to stop the hum, hence the name. the humbucker was invented by Seth Lover (R.I.P)

No worries. Click Here Everything seems a bit strange, at first.

There's a lot to learn - I've been at this since 1968. I've gotten to where I think I have some good ideas as to what the questions are. The answers still elude me. But I continue to seek them. :)

Any style really. Metal, rock, jazz, blues, country, uh...be bop. It doesn't really have a certain style it fits in.

I'd say that humbuckers are generally more versatile than single coils ... Some people may not agree.

H-S-H is a popular configuration , but you''ll finally end up using only the bridge & neck pickups (I maily use my middle S to rest my fingers on it !!).
You may like to consider getting a guitar with only two H's , and having more control buttons, like 2 vol knobs (one for each pickup instead of one master for all).

Personally, I have a guitar w/ HSH config, and I rather like it. I like combining the mid single coil with the neck hum for a cool, snappy jazz/blues lead tone. I think the more pickups, the better tonal versatility.

i dont really like HSH guitars i dont think there is any real use for the single-coil middle pick up...my guitar is an SSH and i love...i also like the HH configuration....my dream would be to have a guitar for http://www.moriarty.com with 3 humbuckers and coil-splitting for each one so i could use single-coils too that would be a cool guitar...plus it would have alot of versatility
....What a long, strange trip its been.....

You have it wrong, Other One. It's

[url]http://www.moriartyguitars.com ">http://www.moriartyguitars.com"> [url]http://www.moriartyguitars.com .

I'm most likely getting a guitar from Matt within the next year or so. I'll be using Jerry Garcia's electronics, basically, with a few changes (Master Tone instead of 2 Tone; 3 Humbuckers instead of 2 Humbuckers and a SC in the neck, etc)

Keeping it relatively simple on the surface is important, which is why I may change my layout from 3 Coil Splitters to One Master Coil Splitter. It would go like this.

-------------------
3-Way Coil Splitter
-------------------
Position 1.) All- Humbuckers. - This means that whatever pickup I've selected, it will be a humbucker. Considering that Coil Splitting isn't done very often, this would be the position it'd be set at mostly.

Position 2.) Neck + Bridge Coil Split. - Middle Pickup remains humbucked, Neck + Bridge are coil split; If I had the pickup selecter at either Neck/Bridge, it would be split.

Position 3.) Middle Split- Neck and Bridge are Humbucked, Middle is split.
-------------------

It's a concept idea; I could even have one "Master Coil Splitter" switch, splitting all three humbuckers, or keeping all three humbucked. This would result in a guitar with these electronics

1 Master Volume
1 Master Tone
1 Master Coil Splitter/1 Three-way Coil Splitter
1 Five-way Pickup Selector
1 Effects Bypass Switch

I've simplified my electronics on the surface to the point where I could make them more 'hi-tech', such as the StarrLabs Digital Pickup Selector w/ LED lights. I would consider this if they didn't take up so much goddamn space (they are meant for stratocasters, mostly). I'm still changing everything around a bit, working with different ideas, etc.
