Im due to needing multi effects soon badly, but i have a problem: whats the difference between a guitar effects processor, and a multi effects mainly im looking at the boss Gt6 i think and roland v-g something....

i know that i want to be able to use it with midi...

are they both the same thing?

Both GT-6 & VG-88 are great , but not exactly the same thing .
Try to gather more info about the onboard effects on each , and their capabilities and match them to your needs.

You may like to take a look at some digitechs too , and avoid Zooms at all costs !

Zoom is a company that makes effect pedals and processors. They are crap.

The GT-6 will give you the capability you are looking for as far as playing with reverb and then adding delay, you just press another switch that's all.
Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

Almost all multi-effect units can do that addd reverb , dist on/off , volume , etc. & work with midi at real time ... They only differ in sound quality , and nuumber of effects on board , and number of effects you can use simultaneously .

For the best sound quality from an economic floor unit , only look for Boss (&Roland) or Digitech .

I'm the proud owner of a GT6 - does what I need it to very well, steep learning curve - because there is a lot of control over a lot of parameters - but well worth the money.

Are you looking for something that uses midi connections or a midi foot controller?

If you've been looking at them then you know the GT6 is a floor based unit that has midi connection capability (as with the VG-88).

The GT6 is indeed a self contained foot board in and of itself but one nice thing is you can program it to go into a manual mode giving you the ability to turn on/off specific effects within a programed/saved user patch.

Let me know what questions you may have about the GT6 and I'll do my best to clear anything up for you.

Just out of curiosity, what makes everyone say that zoom aren't any good? Ive had a zoom 9150 valve DSP for ages and its lovely - does everything i want, the presets are crap though and its a little noisy for recording. is this what people are talking about?

I have a zoom 505, just recently upgraded to a Yamaha DG-STOMP. Really , really good pre-amp with effects. Worth checking it out.

I was tired of my zoom because it's really noisy for recording like you said Tweak. I had to clean the sound after every recording.

Personnaly I'm not a fan of bying new stuff, Id' rather go on ebay and find a deal. Since My needs changes through time, it gets rough on the wallet to always buy new. I know all the "what about the waranty" thing but I never got a bad peice of equipement.

Just make sure you have a built-in pre-amp in your pad, otherwise you'll struggle to get a good sound. If it doesn't have a pre-amp and you still love the effect, try buying a Red Box cabinetulator by H&K (no not gun manufacturer lol). This will soften your sound by emulating two types of cabinet. Schmange recommended that to me and it saved me a lot of time.

good luck

what's a good one for heavy distortion. i'm trying to get a jon schaffer/Iced Earth sound
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I bought a Digitech RP300 a year-and-a-half ago and absolutely love it. It works great for recordings, and has tons of presets. There's sooooo much to it. I'm still learning things about it, but it's extremely easy to use as well. It's got my vote.

Benoit: If/when I get more familiar with my DG Stomp, I'd like to compare patches with you. I got mine on eBay from Roger Fisher (remember Heart?) and some of this stuff is killer!

Leedog: I was just sittin'n'sippin, here in front of my computer...

'quite peaceful, really, 'til I read your siggy...

Hey,
I have the Roland VG-88 and it is pretty awesome. I am wondering if anyone knows how I can connect this unit to my PC to upload and download patches. I have the software for creating patches, but do I need to purchase a midi card or something for my PC?

Thanks!

Lord / I just stumbled on your post in this thread.

I've been out for a while, working on an personal album and, well work also got in the way.

I'm starting to play around the effects, not getting the right sound I want yet but slowly getting there.

You can go to my new site (www.solusproject.com), there's a few clips of the songs I'm working on, you can hear the patches I use.

On the song "something to say" Is one of the default patches but I felt it had too much reverb, so now I'm playing around with it. Less reverb and a touch more delay is giving me a pretty good sound.

I may post the patches on the site one day. But I'll play around a little bit. If you like the sound of the clips send me an e-mail, I'll give you the settings.

Thanks, Benoit.

Lately, I've been just playing through my amp - back to basics. I should pull out the ol' DG Stomp again and fool around with it some more. I was spending too much time farting around with the settings instead of actually playing the guitar, so I put it away for a while.
