I think Jim Gillette still has a sort of "Metal Method" type of thing for singing. You might not be able to use some of it, but I am sure there are a few vocal warmups that would be good for you...
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I recommend getting a reasonable microphone like a Shure SM57 or an SM58 and a portastudio (i.e. Tascam 424 mk 3 or cheaper) / recording thigamey and record your self singing and playing the guitar.

I bet the first couple of times you do it you want to quit and never sing again however, like everything else, the more you do it the better you will get.

The first time I heard my voice recorded I wanted to die ~ !

By recording your self and listening back to your singing, (providing you have a reasonable sense of pitch) you can critique your own work and then work out what needs to be worked on.

You also donā€™t have every git in the world telling you how much you suck (cos everyone does at first) until you are ready, well practiced and confident enough to tell people who diss you to bugger off !

Man I just found out that Jim Gillette is the luckiest f**ker in the world... A 5 octave voice and married to Lita Ford.... DUDE!

King-

You can start by singing scales along with your guitar. Start with the lowest note you can sing comfortable and just work up from there. Then once your get familiar with the scale, try singing the note before you play it on the guitar and check to see how accurate you were. This is will help build accuracy with your vocals. Definitely do what simon said about recording yourself, that will help you recognize and correct faults in your singing. Takes some time if your not used to sing, so be patient. best of luck.

damn man 5 octave range, that's a heck of a range. I can get about 2 and half now and that's pushing it on those higher notes. And yeah lita ford is pretty hot. One day I'll get a gurl who plays guitar, i mean seriously.

5 ain't bad LOL but you know I seem to remember an interview somewhere where Geoff Tate from queensryche claimed to be able to sing 7...count 'em...7 octaves. I don't know just how true that is, but man. That takes a lot of work. That's like singing the entire range of the piano and then some I think. ( My piano is in storage so I can't cooberate(?) that.)

hmms.. from what i know the best singers have an octave range of hardly more than 3.5 and thats ALOT! i find it hard to believe that someone has a full 5 octave range with every note to be sung clearly and precisely, let alone a 7 octave range.

The process of learning to sing is best done with either a good instructional book or a good teacher whoĀ“s into rock. you can do ALOT of harm to your voice when learning it yourself without having a good plan how to build it up. Be carefull when choosing a teacher - some do have a pretty strange view of things and that can also be very dangerous for your voice. What you need to learn before starting to sing is a propper breathing technique - thats the very basic of singing. The basics of rock and classical singing are the same to a certain point - but if you want to learn to sing metal or rock, you should definitely not get too much into classical-voice training.

I dunno, I remember one Mariah Carey where she sings super high, actually, on one singing lesson website, they described as a "whistle" voice, and it does sound like whistling, it's so high.

Anyways, GuitarTricks has a link to that singing lesson site on the main page. It seems to be pretty reputable. I think I'll start a new thread to get opinions, since I've been considering purchasing the CDs.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

7 octaves! NO WAY!! Mariah Carey can't even hit 7 octaves, I think she can sing 6 octaves and she's known for that. Because she can hit the highest notes on a grand piano, but not even Pavoratti can sing the lowest notes on the piano. And I am pretty sure a piano is 7 octaves, 7x12=84, and grand pianos have 88 keys. Maybe he can do it, but I'd have to hear it.

And yeah like az said, Id suggest getting a vocal coach if your serious about singing.

if you ask me, thats simply impossible - the biggest ranges are slightly above 3.5 octaves. if you count the lowes bassnote that can be sung and the highest sopran note that can be sung the whole human voice has a range of 5 octaves (of more than one person) but a normal, good SINGLE voice has about 2 octaves and the exceptional singers have 3 or 3.5 - but NEVER EVER 6 or 7 octaves. trust me.

Check out www.vocalist.co.uk. There are some really good tips there, they mainly seem to focus on proper breathing technique.

LOL!

well - i talked to a Sopran- Singer last weekend who sings alot of stuff all around germany in various ensembles - she has 3 octaves and she said that the absolute maximum you can get out (only a few gifted ones can) of you voice is 4 octaves - thats about it. that is quite amazing - i mean - imagine to sing EVERY note you can play on a 24 fret guitar - thats 4 octaves.

Believe it or not but Mariah Carey's vocal range is somewhere between 5-7 octaves. She is known for that. It's not unusual for a professional singer to be able to sing every note on the guitar.

yeah - maybe on a different planet in a different universe

to have a 7 octave range she must be able to growl like a bear and sing so high that even dogs vanish and bats fall from the sky
