This is the song I liked

LOL...I kinda liked them both cause I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music. I liked the bass part and the groove guitar part (1:48) on splinters song, that was pretty cool. But then again, like many others he only played it for I think 8 measures then a real fast run and stop. EHHH. And that was the catchiest part of the song. The guitar soloing was good, but I don't believe it was completely improv'd on one take, that was definitely planned out.

I liked s@mi's song cause to me that was more artistic, and at least to me that's better than a guitar showcase song. Sami's song(s) was alittle more truthful in a way that it wasn't pushed to be something it wasn't meant to be. In my opinion some of the parts could be improved on, but there was still a melody or harmony that was able to catch my ear.
Bottom line is it was a cool song, and if he would of shredded like Splinter insists on, it would have ruined the song.

I have to toally agree that it was not an improv.....maybe started out that way...then later composed DEfinately....but then again...I have been known to be wrong a time or two (hehehehe)
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

Yeah me too. I think you can usually tell. I don't want speculate on what he did. But when I usually do a solo or pretty much anything, I just play a dummy track and just jam out. Then go back figure out what I did, doctor it up a bit (only where needed cause you don't want the ruin idea of improv), then re-record it. So the idea is basically improv.

That's pretty much what I do as well. Usually over a drum machine....record a simple rythm, lay down some bass, loop it, then solo over it to my hearts content.

I'll also dwnload different backing tracks in different styles...forcing me to play a different way and style. It will definately improve your soloing style whne you are forced out of your confort zone and rehashing your bag of tricks...lol

Me too man, but I usually create my own using midi. Another fun thing to do and is also great practice for your improv skills. Popping in a cd, play a track and put your own thing to it. Just make sure your in the right key, and your putting something over it that goes with it good. I do this all the time just for fun. :) Try playing along with a song you've never heard before. Great practice for when to get together with friends and just jam. I always get into situations like that. :)
