Yeah me too. I think you can usually tell. I don't want speculate on what he did. But when I usually do a solo or pretty much anything, I just play a dummy track and just jam out. Then go back figure out what I did, doctor it up a bit (only where needed cause you don't want the ruin idea of improv), then re-record it. So the idea is basically improv.
