That's pretty much what I do as well. Usually over a drum machine....record a simple rythm, lay down some bass, loop it, then solo over it to my hearts content.

I'll also dwnload different backing tracks in different styles...forcing me to play a different way and style. It will definately improve your soloing style whne you are forced out of your confort zone and rehashing your bag of tricks...lol
