Hi to all,
The other day my friends and I had this sort of argument. They were saying that Hendrix was and forever will be the greatest rock player in the world because he played from his soul. I won't deny this last fact but I stated that both Satriani and Vai had this ability too and were in the same range as Hendrix. Still, they would say that as they received music education they merit was less.
Well I'd like to know what you think about Hendrix and all.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

Its a matter of taste, you know. Personally Vai and Stach bring me stomach disorders, but for me Hendrix is THE KING.

first pf all, i love hendrix. but he is not the most technically skilled player out there. however, if you look at his effect of music and other guitars i would say that he is the greatest.

second, it always gets me so mad when people claim other musicians don't play with soul or emotion. it is impossible as human beings to play without any soul or emotion. all music, from rock to blues to punk to shred to anything else has emotion because a human is playing it. it is complete bullsh!t when somebody says that another plays without feeling. also just because someone went to study music in a school versus someone from hendrix's background doesn't change anything. you're friends do not understand that it doesn't matter what type of music education one has.
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

that's the same thing i told them... One of them was like ohhh but Satriani is just a guy who learned all the scales by heart and makes runs all over them. Bullsh!t man!
I just feel that as many people has said "Hendrix was this, Hendrix was that" that is imposible for them not to be influenced by that.

well, that's true. but for his time he was legendary, no-one else did stuff like that then. he was quite the innovator and idea man. but yes, when you compare him to todays guitarists, he's not as technically skilled. but then, in twenty years or so, we'll start deifying people like the ones you mentioned....i hope.
and about soul. that's f*cking impossible!!! he DID play with a lot of soul, but even if someone is shredding through some scales how can they be playing with less soul than Hendrix? if i blasted through some scales and chords and made a decent song out of it and played it until my heart and soul were dry, how could tell if it was better than what Hendrix did? maybe it would just sound like a shred song, or maybe just a quick punk song. glad i brought that up. punk rockers, those guys aren't great but they pour their blood sweat and tears into the music. brilliant example:*Fugazi*. those guys LIVE for music. how can THEY play with less soul than Hendrix did? it's not measurable...that what i'm saying here. i mean, i'll bet shredders put a lot of heart into their work. but maybe it'll sound mechanical or something. that's not up to us or anyone else.

I believe Hendrix will always be one of the greatest musicians ever for his innovation on his instrument ... It's not about technicality , cuz any kid these days can play Voodoo Child flawlessly , and probably better too .

But that's not it , Hendrix got the technique (at his time) , soul , creativivty , and probably the most IMPRESSIVE stage performances TILL OUR DAY ... And every guitarist seem to learn something from him.

I guess it's so hard to find another guitarist who can have such an inlfluence on other guitarists as Jimi Hendrix.

Something a lot of people miss, is that Jimi was heading into jazz. I've read several articles in jazz-oriented magazines that point to "Third Stone From The Sun" as being the song that marked his intended course. His work with Buddy Miles (a jazz drummer) in Band Of Gypsys was a big step in that direction. One of my favourite tracks doesn't have a name. At Woodstock, after he did a bunch of his trademark musical pyrotechnics (which even then, sounded mostly like noise), he suddenly broke into this lovely, smooth, jazz riff! One of the nice things about the late 60's & early 70's was the absence of boundaries between musical styles.

... but I digress... often... :)

Looooong long time ago when I was a metalhead I used to be like "Blah, Hendrix! Give me Malmsteen, he's better" but after i watched the Woodstock movie and his improvisation I was totaly blown away. This performance was what changed my opinion on hendrix and on playing guitar in general.

Huge respect for how hes influenced other guitarists.

The reason he has influenced others so greatly was because what he was doing at that time was so different and outrageous, if someone nowadays suddenly created a new music style he would indefinately give inspiration to thousands.

When I saw the Woodstock performance, my thoughts changed as well....but for the worse. I did not like the severe bendning and high pitch of the notes. I still like Hendrix, no doubt he is extremely good, but not the best. Personally I think(remember personally) Stevie Ray Vaughan is the best guitar player in my books, but I am a big blues fan.May he Rest In Peace.

well, i also think it's weird that people worship Hendrix. but what makes you hate him so much? do you just not like his music or something? that wouldn't make me hate anyone, it would just make me not like their music...if i didn't like their music. makes sense to me anyway. so why do you hate him so much?
Thanks for listening to this small piece of me.

hey man, i didn't say i hate him. I just hate when they worship him. I respect Hendrix because he was ahead of his time and made a tremendous innovation on music.
To sum it up, I like him a lot but it really gets on my nerves when people overrate him.
