pinched harmonics...

someone please help me on pinched harmonics, i juct can't get to grips with them! i can sometimes do them while playing, but only by accident!!! so please help me!

also, it just takes practise. a lot lot lot lot of practise. should i say that again? a LOT! most people actually 'pinch' the string, but others also just kind of tap/touch it. hard to explain. sorry if i'm being vague.
but the site should help, and practise practise practise. this technique does take a long time to learn, let alone master. you've basically learned it when you can do it almost every position every time.
just stick with it.

Hmm..i dont know on how i did it..but i pick the string at an angle to pinch it..but still i havent yet master it, to sustain the harmonic is harder! Anyone know how to?. I still need a lot of practice... practice..and more of it like wat canuck7 said..lolz its damn true!

Arh yesss..1 more thing after i pick them at an angle..then i use my side of thumb to stop the sttring or sort of..something like that i guess. i think that might help a little.

Hope this helps. Make sure you know where the right places are to play pinch harmonics, you can do this by measuring the distances between the nut and various frets which give good natural harmonics e.g. 12th, 7, 5, 4,3,2.7 etc. Then measure these distances away from the bridge and see where they fall in relation to your pickups.
Play lightly with a thin contact area for a short time, my posting explains my personal favourite technique.
When you've got the hang of it you will be able to play scales of artificial harmonics, maybe even scales of natural harmonics if you get really hot. You can also play chords, that can be very hard or quite easy (depending on the shapes).

I love pinch harmonics, do them all the time...Though it sucks that Zakk Wylde got to them first haha...
There's so many things you can do with them on different spots of the neck...Like pings, squeels, and trills. I love 'em.

You can trill harmonics? My GOD!! You must use up and down strokes to do that do you?

When I trill harmonics, I use touch harmonics. I got this one from watching some Joe Satriani videos.
You can trill or play legato with the fretting hand, that sounds the strings. Then with the pick hand, touch the string where you would normaly sound a pinch harmonic.
You can have some fun with this one.

Zakk Wylde wasn't the first to use pinches. Eddie Van Halen was big on them, and my guitar teacher used to tell me how when he was a he kid his friends would do them all the time. They just called them speals cause they didn't know they were harmonics.

That's more of an artificial harmonic rather than a "pinched" pick harmonic.

Cool trick Josh, i'll have to try that. I guess it's easier to move up and down the same string this way and easier to cross strings with pinches?
I notice another Rush fan here, "another toy.. to help destroy etc", 2112 has some of my favourite music in the world on it, I've loved rush since my bro got me into them aged 6, i'm 24 now and still love their stuff between '76 and '84. For anyone who doesn't know Alex Lifeson's a master guitarist, he violins pinches like it was easy and writes great melodic guitar solos with bits of shrapnel thrown in.

I've jsut tried that trick, and am finding it rock hard, do you use the tips or flats of your fingers?

I use the flat, much less chance of sliding off the string.
And N4Player, what do you mean? I reffered to two different types of harmonics, one of which actually was a pich harmonic, so if you mean my touch harmonic thing, I know its more like an artificial harmonic. I only brought up the pinch harmonic thing to illustrate where to touch the string.

i was playin today, as always :) and i came across this harmonic thing. It sounds kinda like a pinch harmonic, and you don't have to move your right hand if you move your left. they way i did it, i was picking close to the neck, using the bridge pickup (i have a jackson rhoads, by the way), had plenty o' distortion, and my pinky on my picking hand was just barely touching the string. If you can somehow get a close up of the neck pickup on a rhoads, itll be easier to explain where my pinkie was. IT was at about where the 28th fret would be, right above the bridge side of the neck pickup (over the actual pickup). So my pinky would create a harmonic that rang for ages. im not sure if this is what you're refering to as artificial harmonics or not, just thought i would share it with you.

I've done that by accident before. :)
