Hi I'm Neil from the UK. Just recently started learning. I'm kind of doing ok. Tried to learn the intro from shiny happy people, which so many I'm sure is so easy, but I can't seem to bar down on the D-G-B on the 5th to make the C chord. Is it important to be able to do this or can I stick to the standard form? Will I just need to mute the e on the 1 string?

Thanks

Great question. You can absolutely play an open C in substitution of the barre chord. It won't be the correct timbre of the song, but it will be the correct notes. However, you should keep working on getting that barre chord down. That's a key chord shape to be able to play. You'll want to be able to do a chord in that way easily as you progress in your guitar journey. Keep working on it!

6-4 is right (usually written on top of each other, can't do it on reddit). The name refers to the intervals above the lowest note: A is a 6th above C, and F is a 4th.

EDIT: so in C major, it'd be IV 6/4. The Roman numeral IV is because the root of the chord, F, is the fourth note of the C major scale.
