Great question. You can absolutely play an open C in substitution of the barre chord. It won't be the correct timbre of the song, but it will be the correct notes. However, you should keep working on getting that barre chord down. That's a key chord shape to be able to play. You'll want to be able to do a chord in that way easily as you progress in your guitar journey. Keep working on it!
