Hi everybody

So here´s my question.

I am a begginner and I am trying really really hard to get the Fmaj chord with no luck. I tried all positions, exercises with my hand and guitar and nothing....

So, would it ok to say that if I can´t play that chord, I could play Fm7 instead?? I mean I now they are they same, but sound kind of similar to me, and its really frustating to see songs in the lesson plan with Fm and not to be able to play them..

Give some advice and please dont just tell me its about practice cuz I am now practicing hard, but I need some advice, tactics, workaround or something

Hi mikefsm,

Which version of the Fm chord are you attempting to play? Our chord chart on Fm here: https://www.guitartricks.com/chords/F-chord/min

If you're trying to play the Fm barre chord, it is going to be difficult since it's a barre chord. If you're a beginner, barre chords are really difficult because it may be tough to hold down the strings at the first fret.

Check out this lesson on how to break up the barre chord to make things a little easier. Check out this lesson from Anders on how to break up barre chords so that they're easier to play: https://www.guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=27963

And for more ways to play barre chords, check out Gary's lesson here: https://www.guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=28646

Let me know if that helps!

Billy

Hi Billy

I am talking about the F chord as in this link

https://www.guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=23477&s_id=1906

and its not a bar code, well it is a semi bar chord...

What happens is that I see some people using Fm7 as a variation of the chord, maybe to avoid the hassle of the F chord itself... not sure...

I'm still working it out but few results...

Thanks

The alternative that works for me is in https://www.guitartricks.com/forum/thread.php?f=46&t=53549

I suspect there is also some confusion, Fm that you wrote is F minor, but I think you are really meaning F major

No worries Mike and yes, I think it helps us all when we help each other. Good luck with it.

Let's see if this helps.

Do this simple diad version of the F chord for now. Put the tips of your ring and middle fingers on these notes. Reach your fingers around until you can comfortably grab those notes (fingertips straight down into the strings) and your thumb on the back of the neck. Do not hold any part of the neck with the palm of your hand.

F chord:

E |----------|[br]B |----------|[br]G |-2--------|[br]D |-3--------|[br]A |----------|[br]E |----------|

Any time you need an F major chord just play that. Later, work on adding the next string!

E |----------|[br]B |-1--------|[br]G |-2--------|[br]D |-3--------|[br]A |----------|[br]E |----------|

Try that and let me know how it goes. You can gradually add the E string barre later after you can do those first 2 options.

[p]No, F minor chord is not a good substitute for F major chord. But this part of your post makes it sound like the F minor chord is what you are struggling with.

Okay, but no matter what the solution or workaround is . . . it's going to involve practice. :)

Thank you so much for that advice.

and

I have to confess that I feel much better now after getting so many ideas, like the one from William MG

I will continue practicing cuz I'm not giving up...!

Thanks
