I was wondering what method do ya'll think is the most effective is the tuning with harmonics better than the 5th fret and u know the rest. Or are they about the same?? Personally I feel the harmonics one is easier because i have an ear for the deaf when it comes to ear tuning and all that crap, i just throw on a crapload of distortion and tune with harmonics and listen for the up and down waves ( i cant member what those are actually called so thats good for now).

Those would be called beat frequencies.

Personally I prefer a tuner. But for quick tunings I do either the 5th fret thing or harmonics, whatever works best in the situation I'm in.

heres a pretty cool and precise method - i go by this one - its the most accurate tuning method i know:

Well, here's what I do (it works every time for me) -

First of all, make sure you have all reverb and effects turned off on your amp. You want a plain old clean tone. Tune the high E string with your tuner, and then put your tuner back in your case, cause you won't be needing it anymore. Tune the 12th fret natural harmonic on the B string to the 7th fret high E. Tune the 12th fret harmonic on the G string to the 3rd fret high E. Tune the 12th fret harmonic on the D string to the 3rd fret B string. Tune the 12th fret harmonic on the A string to the 2nd fret G string. And tune the 12th fret harmonic low E to the 2nd fret D string. Double check with a few chords, and you're done.

when I'm practically in tune, but want it a little sharper I use a chromatic tuner on all the strings...

otherwise I just use the 55540 method (50xxx unison, x50xx...) A fretted string doesn't sound exactly like an open string, but they should still be unison.

Nothing is more accurate than a tuner. If you don't have a tuner, the method that Azrael mentioned is very good.

There's no substitute for expeience. So get out there and break some strings on stage.

I tried this but my guitar sounds worse. Some chords sound fine, but most are not. So my ears are rejecting equal temperament, and I have to just put up with it to adjust or what?

I posted a thread earlier about how one of my guitars only plays certain chords depending on how I tune it .... well my other guitars sound fine.

You may have an intonation problem. All the tuning in the world won't help unless you get that guitar strobed first.
