guitar synthesizers
could anyone tell me what is the benefit and full scope of using a guitar synth....also why do we not hear of its frequent use?

It lets us guitar players record multitrack stuff without having to learn the keyboards. Don't have a clue why more people don't use em tho cause I'd be lost without mine.

Schmange....
well I really feel my guitar is severely limited compared to keyboards where you can do everything from recording drums to basslines etc...and I like to work alone...I really cant go in for a synth attachment right now...
but can you tell me to what extent MIDI can help me..for example I heard that there is some kind of software that can actually translate individual guitar notes and assign them different tones/sounds...(and it need not be real time)

This is exactly what MIDI is. By installing a MIDI-pickup, you can just use your guitar as a MIDI-controller.

Exactly.
For drums you just map out your drummap so that certain notes on the guitar trigger different parts of the drum kit. For bass, you transpose everything down by an octave. For most keyboard parts you use the hold pedal to sustain them. The only time you have to resort to a keyboard is when a guitar isn't practical or when a part triggers too many glitches.
You can use the guitar synth to fade in synth or string parts behind your guitar playing when you play live too.
