Hey everybody!

I've been playing guitar for going on 10 years now...However, the instruction I've had just focused on my actual playin ability.

I am going to school as a music major, and I would like to get a head start on the compitetion.

Can anyone give me a good spot that helps me in understanding and identifying the types of:

Intervals & Triads

Any holp is much appreciated!

Thanks

You've been playing for 10 years and not gotten into intervals. Wow.
Well, intervals refer to the distance between two notes. Triads are built from three notes.
If I have a major scale, I spell it with numbers like this;

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

And we build chords and triads from this. If I wanted to create a power chord out of this scale, I would just use 1 and 5, so this interval is called a perfect fifth. I could also have 1 and 7, which would be a major seventh, or 1 and 3, a major third.
If I have 1, 3 and 5, I have a major triad. If I have 1, b3 and 5, I have a minor triad. Getting the idea? Cool.
I would get a book and brush up on your scales and stuff, then this will come to ya real easy.

Yeah, compared to you I have not been playing long at all, but theory isn't really that tuff to grasp. I think when someone gets on a site like this and says, "Hey, where can I get some tab to learn guitar?" they should be encouraged to look at reading music and learning theory first. All well. I'm glad your getting into theory.

Well you can't just study theory... that's like "don't go in the water until you learn how to swim."

Very true...that's why I'm hoping that my playing ability will allow me to better grasp the concepts that I overlooked when I started.

I'm going to University of California at Riverside, in Riverside California...It's a pretty good school...if you wanna check it out it's

As I understand it, the music major is pretty good in standings against other schools as well! :)

to get familliar with intervals you should try a piano or keyboard - let someone sit there and play a random note and then a second one afer that (within one octave) and you try to determin what interval that was without looking. do the same thing with the standard chords major, minor, dim and aug. this helps ALOT! especially for yer hearing

A cool site that has a feater like that is http://www.good-ear.com
Also I've dabbled with the piano before. When your looking at a keyboard, you see why certain intervals have the names they do, or why chords like dominant 7th or minor 6/9 have those names.
Also, I beleive it is a requirement in some music colleges for students to take keyboard, for this excact reason. I know it is at Humber College. I'd like to end up there some day.
