In the solo of the song master of puppets by metallica of course,i've been practicing the really, really fast one. I have the book for it but i was wondering if there's anyone that knows how to play it. There's a part in the solo in the middle where kirk makes the string really squeal with the trem bar. i have no freakin clue how to play this. It says right underneath the quealing *This note produced by pulling stg. off the edge of the fretboard, "fretting" it against pickup. i don't really have any idea how that works and would really want to know. please tell me!@ $@!#

When you pull the string downward, sometimes, it runs off the Neck, making a real high pitch. That's what he did in there. As for the fretting on pickup, it means that he is pushing the strings ON the pickup, so that the metal plots act as a 36/38th fret= very high pitch.

I know exactly the part of the song your talking about, Kirk Hammet even said in an interview that what he created there was an accident but it sounded really cool so they kept it. To this day I've never heard Kirk duplicate it live before...but that's not to say It's not impossible for you to duplicate...just practice it.
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

it also depend on how close the neck pickup is to your strings in how easy/hard it will be.

Actualy this thing (fretting against pickups) usualy have different pitches on different guitars, due to different scales , pickup positions , wether they're singles or humbuckers , their hight from the surface of the body...

You can get similar effect by harmonics , try the G string 5th , 4th & 3rd fretts , and have some fun with the tremolo..
this should work on any guitar (with a tremolo bar of course)

Live, Kirk just frets way at the top of the neck somewhere and hits an artificial harmonic. It usually sounds different every time, but that's what he does.
Rock and roll ain't noise pollution, but it can get pretty crappy these days.
