In Pantera's Cemetery Gates approx 1:33 into the song there is a part where he makes the guitar 'squeal'. I'm sure it's some kind of harmonic but I'm not sure how exactly it is done. Can someone please tell me how to do.

He has been quoted a couple of times with this, it's pretty much 4/5 guitars overdubbed, some with an harmonic, some with a whammy pedal. He's does it live too, but it has less power.

actually he didn't use the wammy pedal on Cemetary gates.
He strikes the open g string with his finger (to sound it) slightly, bar dives, then pulls his wammy bar toward the bridge and presses down (Same as pulling up your wammy bar...just a fancier way of doing it) then slightly touches the 5th fret harmonic. This produces that scream you hear.
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

Note: Forgot to mention you touch the 5th fret harmonic slightly with your finger while raising the pitch with your wammy bar.

In an interview in guitar world, that's what he explained (overload of beer might explain why he mentioned it too)

The thing you hear in Cemetery Gates at 1:33 is simply a natural harmonic and then tremolo bar dive.

what 'MikeP' explained is a another very cool Technique that is over used by Dimebag, you can hear it at the end of Cemetery Gates ,
but actualy Dimebag doesn't strike the string with the pick at all, he just do this:

1 - dive the bar
2 - hit (like hammering but without fretting) the harmonic with
your left hand middle finger and mute other strings with the
rest of your fingers
3 - raise the bar to the pitch you want

it's not an easy to learn technique, specialy the muting thing, but it sounds cool and worth the effort

I've been able to duplicate that sound perfectly....but then again...equipment does help.

My rig:

Mesa Boogie Triaxis
Rocktron Intellifex
DOD 32 stereo Eq
Mesa Boogie Stereo Simul-Class 2:Ninety Power Amp
2 4 X 12 Boogie Rectifier Bottom Cabs (With the Armor Plating)
(plus other equipment I've listed somewhere on this site)

Pluss I use EMG's in my Gitars.

You can have the technique down, but to get the exact sound, your rigs gotta comapare to what the pros are using.

I'm seriously thinking of selling my Rocktron and going back to an ADA Mp1. I'm also saving up for the Eventide DSP 7000 Ultra Harmonizer wich hopefully I'll have by christmas or shortly after (Damned bills)

....and you actually sound the G string (Ever so slightly) with one of your fretted fingers before you dive ever so slightly then sound the natural harmonic then pull the bar up.

Ok, two questions.
One: For the 'scream' you whammy down, 'tap' G with left hand then touch 5th fret G for haromic and then whammy up?

Two: For the other notes besides the muting what does he do? They aren't harmonics but the hve a different sound. What are those?
So sayeth the great

Answers:

one: yes, but it doesn't have to be always the 5th frett, you can try 7th , 3rd , etc. but you will find it hard some places on the frettboard and easier on other pots.. also it doesn't have to be the G string, you may like to try the B string and other strings as well for different pitches, but on high e string it will be very damn hard to do it and keep muting right.

two: I didn't understand this one.. what other notes do you mean? Harmonized notes? if yes, then it's the same thing but you will need a harmonizer effect for that, it's found in most multi-effect unit but to get the right one you'll have to save money for an Eventide.. I have never actualy tried it (hope i could someday) but I know that every guitarist on the planet who can afford it have this unit in his Rack..

By the way, an Eventide DSP7000 Harmonizer costs over $3000

Also as 'MikeP' said, you'll need good equipment to do the scream, not as good dimebag's rig of course, but the most important thing is a very high distortion sound, I can do this trick on any guitar (equiped with tremolo bar) plugged into any amp, but with a Good distortion pedal like the Boss Metal Zone or the DOD Death Metal...

Any way, if you want to know my gear, i use Jacksons, Boss GT-3 , Marshall amps

So I can't get the exact sound without the harmonizer?

And fo the 'scream' do I pluck the string them do harrmonic or pluck and do harmonic at the time of pluck or do I tap string with left hand and then do harmonic or do I tap with left and do the harmonic at that instant.

Still, to be able to talk about beer for half of the interviews... Man, I wish we had some other examples to show to aspiring guitarists.

I went to guitarworld and I saw how to do the scream. Now in the riff approx 1:33 how does he get the other notes besides the muting and the scream?
