I really dont see the big deal with that song. Maybe for its time its awesome but so far as compared to rock power ballads of late I think it just seems boring.
You have arppegios on not too common chords in the intro which is nice but its so repetitve!! it builds up to the solo which its exactly of a unique style of soloing(maybe for its time tho). I like the thumpin barr chord ending tho!!!

What do you guys think of it?

Its like free bird - yeah its great.. but compared to the outro of Paradise City by guns n roses its nothing!!

I think people tend to like the bands who started things as apposed to those who subsequently did it better.
Its like Mario Kart on the snes - good but nowhere near as good as the N64 version!! People say the snes one is better just to be smart!!

One thing you might want to remember about classic rock, the fans that made songs like that popular, grew up listening to AM radio and 45's on the turntable, until album oriented rock started happening the radio only played 2:59 min. stuff, and we live in a world that celebrates "Firsts", Who was the first guy to climb Mt.Everst, OK, who was the last? Milestones of the past look smaller in the rearveiw mirror, alot of people may do something better latter, but they have to walk in other's footsteps to do it, Even though I think I have heard Stairway to Heaven enough times, it does amaze me that even after all these years, people that have heard it a million times and people that are hearing it for the first time still get off on it, their must be something there....

I think its an okay song, but Zeppelin has done far better. And they rated it #1 in Guitar World for the best guitar solo ever. That surprised me. I thought it would be Eruption or something.

I suppose it set the blueprint for rock ballads after it, it was the concept that counted and the fact that its a nice song is a bonus. Even though page "borrowed" the intro from some christian song its still a classic.

as my music tastes have progressed, i've never gotten tired of that song, it still remains my favorite. one time during a road trip, i listened to it for ten hours straight. i know, there are much more difficult songs, and zeppelin has made some other great ones, but i still love this song. for some reason it really resonates very deeply with me, as i suppose it has with many others

however other people have their views, and i respesct the fact that they believe there are better songs out there. stairway will always be my favorite. one of the reasons i like it, i guess is that it is one of the most melodic songs in history. the solo is very emotional, much more emotional than paradise city, although i like that a lot. to me, at least its a great song.
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

TEN HOURS????
I cant listen to my favorite song that long. It would get boring to me. Stairway to Heaven is a nice song to listen to every once and a while, but I wouldn't want to do that with any song, cause I'd get board of it.

i usually get bored after listening to songs after a while as well, but strangely, i didn't.

It was my favourite song for a long time and there was a time when I could listen to it for hours on end but to me, over the years its lost something, although I still love the song. The proble is alot of the time I cant be bothered listening to 8 minutes of the song, but as soon as Im drawn in Im hooked.

I still think it is a great song. You have to remember that when these bands first started they were like rebels because it was so different from the easy-going simple 60s songs. I don't think it is the greatest solo but it comes in close.

It's a great song because it starts out mellow, slow, and beautifully poetic, then builds to that driving crescendo about the "wind on down the road," etc, then resolves back to the slow poetic bit. Of course, many songs start out slow then build force, but not many are as poetic as "Stairway." Music alone doesn't make a song great, in my opinion, it's the poetry, man! That's why "Eruption" won't go down in history as a great song.

Paradise City is rather silly in comparison. I mean: "Take me down to the paradise city, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty." This is utterly insignificant compared to "There's a songbird who sings, sometimes all of our thoughts on his wingtips. There's a lady who's sure, all that glitters is gold," I forget the rest, but you get the idea, right?

Just my opinion, but hey, some people's opinions are better than others. Just kidding!

I was just saying that Eruption was more groundbreaking than Stairway to Heaven. Thats why it sould be the #1 solo. I did say SOLO not SONG.

I agree with you David C. Stairway to Heaven has more meaning and was wrote about a serious subject, unlike those other songs.

What subject?

A piper in the woods?

I dont think the lyrics to Stairway are great, theyre just sung well. I dont think Eruption was as groundbreaking as its made out to be.

I do, without it, we wouldn't have had the hair bands. I mean the good ones anyway.

You Guy's ever heard of Alex Lifeson from the band Rush? he wrote the solo for La Villa Strangiato in 1979, which I think was before E V Halen. O.k there's no tapping in it but I think it's the greatest electric guitar solo ever written and I'm not sure how ground breaking eruption is in view of this, I've love Lifeson's playing since i was 5 and at 23 I still think he was the best even though his lutput of material at tat level is very small compared to for instance EVH, Malmsteem or Satch,.
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Like his playing, but I don't like Rush.
