We need some Neil Young songs here. Start the petition.

Maybe the owners of the rights to Neil Young's songs don't want to deal with GuitarTricks, or maybe they want too much money for the rights to use the music here. It's the only reason I can think of. I'm sure the GuitarTricks tutors and administrators would include some iconic Neil Young if they could.

Just guessing of course!

Neil Young is notoriously stingy with permission to use his music. Not GT's fault.

Probably trying to recoup losses on his music player

Old thread I know but I've just joined based on the hope that somewhere in the 11000 lessons I'll find some great tips and improve. I've really been on the fence though because like some...I struggle to believe that Hendrix and Neil Young don't feature on a GUITAR website.

I read about licensing etc and not sure what that's all about, but if I can learn hear my train etc etc from all over the internet for free, then struggle to understand why we can't pay for it. Real Bummer, but liking the rest so far. Now....scales....

I can understand artists being stingy with rights to their recorded songs, but a music teacher teaching their versions of songs? Weird. Not like Neil Young's gonna miss out on giving guitar lessons himself, so wonder what the actual issue is? That awesome shutupandplay bloke (Andy) could get hammered if teaching your interpretation of songs is an issue.

He was recently I suspect. One might surmise entity or persons anon registered formal complaint or initiated litigation, as the majority of his tabs previously downloadable from his commercial website have recently been removed.

Concur 100% about Andy's YT song tutes and overall ability as a natural teacher. Even there he's so good his tutes are not 'safe'. The YT alogarithm auto detected and removed the soundtrack from his "Black Dog" tute mistaking it for the original LZ recording. :) Legend!

Look here at a thread about this subject. There is a lot in legally obtaining the rights to a song. As simple as it would seem, it's not easy.

Also, watch this video from Rick Beato on this very subject. One thing he said in this vid (paraphrasing); you have managers who still think in terms of the 'old way' and want total control over everything thinking that they are losing money.

To legally license songs, it's a hard road. Read through that thread. It will explain a lot.

Jeff

I was looking for that thread a couple of days ago. It really should be in an FAQ thread.

Neil is one of the few artists who can make clear his feeling about song licensing, critique certain artists and advertisers who have no such scruples, and do it with a horn section:

This Note's For You...

Enjoy.

I don't think anyone including moi ever suggested it was "simple" or "easy", rather just doable for the most part and not impossible where the genuine will to do so was present, occasional non-negotiable or non-economically viable exceptions notwithstanding.

That said, anyone with an IQ arithmetically greater than their numerical shoe size is aware that Guitar Tricks is a business whose raison detre is to turn a healthy profit whilst providing tuition to the satisfaction of the majority demographic their core focus.

I also understand that conflict of interest when it comes down to spending on licencing of song tutorials. Self-evident to those of us having been on the planet a while and around it more than a few times speaking in both the metaphorical and literal sense, that the primary obstacle to obtaining and executing song tutorial licencing is cost to the enterprise vs benefit at a grudge point the consumers will accept. Everything else including false objections is deflectional smokescreen.

Can't wait for more useless distractional novelty fluff like achievement awards, progress badges and other deflectional nonsense instead of seeing fulillment of overwhelmingly popular song requests of legends and highest selling band record sales ever after The Beatles like Led Zeppelin, et al.

Never mind. Steve, Andy, Justin and others have that covered. Having wised up, it's easy enough to pick up the ball in their 'A' game and run with it. Touchdown!

Just adding my 0.02$[br][br]I do agree it is a pitty that some rights are either too expensive to be economically viable or too complicated to obtain.

But the most important is to learn the technique and feel needed, and maybe some lessons in the style (even if loosely) of a given artist. [br][br]Having that under your belt, particularly for not too complicated songs, you may find tabs of specific songs browsing around, and browsing some more, even relatively accurate ones.

Yeah, but tell us what you really think, manXcat!

I think yours is an informed, well thought out opinion and not just a knee-jerk rant so I'm not trying to be dismissive -- I just can't resist throwing a jab in there.
