Hello Everyone,

From an early age I told myself I wasn't musically inclined. I was good in school and sports, but didn't seem to have any aptitude for math or music. I reinforced that I couldn't do either.

That said, I've always been drawn to guitar, classical specifically. So I decided to finally give it a go. I've never done anything so challenging and demoralizing, yet also showing glimmers of excitment and hope.

I picked up a Breedlove Pursuit Acoustic in nyon (after trying a finger-slicing steel string). As mentioned, I love the tone from a classical guitar anyway, and it seems to be just as good on which to learn.

I'm only as far as D, A and E chord, and it's still a ridiculous challenge. I can do D and E pretty consistently but A gives me fits. I'm wandering in the dessert but I hope to see some progress soon. I signed up for GT so I could learn at my own pace, and control my own frustration and impatience.

I wish everyone on this same journey lots of luck and hope to learn from everyone here.

Doug

Hi Doug,

You'll be playing these chords easily in no time and wondering how you found them difficult! Unfortunately, there's always another "impossible" task waiting... That's why it's fun though.

Good luck

Steve

HI, Doug!

I felt the same way starting out. And I also tend more toward the classical or fingerpicking style. Now I have a steel string acoustic Yamaha and a Sigma Martin that has silk and steel which are easier on the fingers. Different sounds.

Just keep plugging along and you'll get there. But beware....there's always MORE to learn as I'm finding out.

GOOD LUCK!!

This is the best site I have seen for beginners as well as intermediate and maybe even advanced players. I am 65 and just picked up the guitar this past year, and have been very successful in learning using GT. Hope all the beginners have success. My suggestion might go against the format here, but when I was young, I found that I learned chords, and then learned a few songs and just went from there. To all beginners I suggest going through fundamentals 1 and 2, but with a grain of salt added. If you start to get frustrated, switch to a few beginner songs with the chords you know and then go back to lessons.
