I now have a quandary and need everyone's help that owns either one. I have the money to buy either a Martin GPCP A5 or a Taylor 114 CE. I know the Martin name is better, however, down the road if I decided to sell in 5 years, which is going to be worth more in the long run. I have played both, and since I am somewhat a beginner I don't see much difference between the two. Both have decent action and tone. HELP!! Thanks
Taylor or Martin

Sup John,
I have a 33 year old Martin D28 and can't adress the sound of GPCP. But I did own a Taylor 214CE which I can attest to. I found that my 214 was too rich in treble. I was at a funeral one time and a guy was playing a 214CE through an amp. It sounded terrible. I immediately sold the Taylor. Now, some like all that treble, but as a bluegrass guy I like an even tone, bass, mids & treble. Granted, my Martin has a solid bass which rings out, but the mids and treble are pretty equal. Can't go wrong with a Martin in my humble opinion.

There's bound to be a difference but I doubt it will be significant. Know this...guitars bought new rarely, if ever, hold their value, especially lower end models by the major mass manufacturers. IMO, buying a new guitar is much like buying a new car...instant depreciation. Many guitars do appreciate but they do so over time much longer than five years and I believe many were top-end models to begin with. And then there is the issue of individual instrument differences within the group of any one model. Another issue is the sometimes up and down reputation of some brands...there are instances of major manufacturers turning out guitars during periods of their history that were later distained for one reason or another.
The best advice is probably to buy the one you like the most and to put aside the thought of its future value.

The D'Angelico would be a good choice. I own a Bowery 500 Dreadnought with spruce top and rosewood sides and back. It's a nice sounding axe and a very playable guitar for not a lot of money invested. It also comes with Fishman electronics if you have the need to plug in.

That is what I am hoping for, as I just purchased the D'Angelico Bowery 500 from MF as shown here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/dangelico-bowery-dreadnought-cutaway-acoustic-electric-guitar
Fishman Electronics include a built in Tuner as well. Great price at 50% off. Reg. $999 on sale for $499. I hope it is as nice as the reviews say it is.

I currently play a Martin GPCPA4 Shaded and I played some Taylors when I was deciding to buy. As already mentioned, it's a matter of your personal taste. I wouldn't worry about long term value. Both are very nice guitars with different characters. Buy the one that has your tonal preference and comfort with playability and you won't be disappointed. Good luck!

I play a Taylor GS mini and I love it, I always go back to it. For a smaller guitar out of Martin and Taylor I found the Taylor sounded better to me. Side note if your a green person Taylor is making huge strides in renewable tone woods etc. That being said a Martin is still on my list.
