Axe2,
You are not alone. I just bought my 7th guitar. A beautiful Epiphone Hummingbird Pro acoustic/electric. Now, if I could only play better.

Good luck with the new Strat.

Two guitars are good to have. Anything after that is an addiction. But a good addiction :-)

More than two an addiction? I dunno.

I've got an Ovation 12-string, a Gibson 336 semi-hollow and a Martin D-35. I'd like to believe that's not excessive and that there's a wide range of sound afforded by the three.

Sound wise, I'd also like to believe there's room for another one or two. :D

Strat...Tele...Rickenbacker 12...

Yeah I think you need about 4 or 5 to cover all genres:

1. A Gibson Les Paul, 2. a Strat of course, 3. a PRS or Ibanez, 4. a hollow-body (for jazz), 5. and an acoustic.

Might as well say you need 4/5 amps too!

I think you could get away with 3:

- acoustic amp

- Marshall

- Mesa Boogie Mk 4 or 5

I can't think of a tone you couldn't obtain with those 5 guitars and these 3 amps. But I welcome any challengers! :)

Being this thread turned into being about tone
How many tones does one need.
Or is best to find your own tone.
Just askin.

It depends! :-).

In a cover band, I think you need flexibility in your tone to at least approach the tones of the originals, unless you've taken the approach to put your own spin and sound on the tunes!

For original material, certainly you should find your tone! You tone should be one that inspires you and propels your playing. It becomes part of your signature sound. That's because part of your tone comes from you...your hands.

I've found 2 tones that really inspire me. One is my strat on the neck pickup through the clean channel on a tube amp. More recently, I have found my Les Paul on the bridge pickup through a tube screamer to be really inspiring. It can be sort of mellow, but if you crank it and start digging is, it can, well, scream!! SRV loved his tubescreamer...if it was good enough for him... :-).

I can see myself finding at least one more tone for heavier stuff. I've been dabbling with the Dist+ pedal for this.

Thats true.
You know me I love buying gear, guitars more the better.
But I dont think you need a crab load of guitars for every tone ur after. This is why they made pedals, effect units.
like ur zoom g5,ect.

There are certain tones that are hard to find on anything but a particular guitar. The strat I think is a good example, especially with the pickup selector in position 2 or 4 (combine center/bridge, center/neck). Humbuckers have their signature sound. P90's as well.

However, I have found that the single coil mode on my LP does a pretty good approximation of the strat tone that's workable for a stage performance. If I were recording in the studio, I'd pull out my strat.

Speaking of the Strat, I never use those combination positions. I always use the neck pickup or the bridge. The sound seems to be more cluttered whenever I combine pickups.

But maybe I just need to spend more time with it.

It depends on the kind of pickups your strat has.
I would think.

Yeah, it depends on the pickups. If you have standard single coil pickups. those positions actually noise cancel (humbuck). You'll notice that any hum will go away in those positions. The sounds is kind of nasally and distinctive.

Originally I didn't use them either, until I realized Clapton, SRV, and Rory Gallagher would use those positions. Add a bit of gain on the amp or through something like a tube screamer and you can get some interesting tones.

well i will say this im shocked that my 08 and 2013 strats sound better out of my marshall dsl oppose to my prs se that has humbuckers. not to say the hb sound bad. i just like the single coil tone better, its not as heavy as the hummers. havent compaired the 59/09 yet.
