I'd say "twanky" would be a fair description of some of the sounds you might get from a single coil. In all fairness, I'd say if you like that smooth, full sound that you get from humbuckers, stick with it. Single coils do not sound the same. A traditional single coil Strat style guitar would be a definite departure from your PRSs.

THANKS SLIP,YEAH I DO LOVE HUMBUCKERS,I HEAR THE EMG51/EMG55 ARE GREAT HUMBUCKS FOR METAL.I LIKE STEVE VIA;S AXE WITH THE MONKEY HANDLE,.OR JOE SATRIANI'S AXE IS NICE,BUT I DONT WONT ANY FLOYED ROSE TREMS.I'LL STICK WITH WHAT I KNOW BEST.i dont think iam gonna buy another custom 24 just way too expensive, but they just came out with a S2 CUSTOM 24 FOR ABOUT HALF THE PRICE OF THE CUS24.THE S2 STRIPS DOWN THE CUS24,THAT ADDS DIFFERENT BEVELED TOP,3 WAY SWICTH INSTEAD OF 5 WAY,IT SAYS IT VERSATILITY COMES FROM ITS CUSTOM WOUND PICKUPS.THAT DOESNT TELL ME MUCH.THEY LOOK MORE LIKE THE SE MODELS THE WAY THERE BEVELED .MADE IN USA..HEY HAVE YOU HEARD THE STORY THAT NOT ALL GUITARS THAT SAY MADE IN USA ARENT AT ALL.GOST GUITARS?

Yeah, single coils are a different beast from humbuckers. I'm a sucker for smooth fat tone, so on my strat, I tend to use my neck pickup. The middle pickup seems to have a signature strat sound which I like too - reminds me of some of the tones that SRV and Eric Johnson would get. I only use the bridge pickup if I'm covering a tune and want to replicate the sound.

Humbuckers are nice too with the extra umph on the output. You can really drive your amp HARD!!

Axe, I think you should look at Ibanez, and some of the other similar brands, such as Jackson and LTD... they all offer really well constructed guitars under $1K, and sometimes there are great deals to be had. I picked up a made in Japan Jackson a few years back at Guitar Center... retailed I think for $799, then went on sale for $499, but the day I bought it, it was being cleared out at $300. It does have a floating bridge, but it still holds its tuning really well... just as good as my other guitars if I don't use the whammy bar much.

You can get a fixed bridge from all those brands though... then you've got a guitar that you don't have too much invested in. The Jackson I have plays great and sounds really good... if you were in Portland Oregon I'd happily lend it to you. Anyways, give those brands a look and see what you think. I think you might be really happy with a guitar from one of them.

Only just read your previous thread Axe. Not surprised at your anger etc.
It's a bummer when scum bags do that, I had a break in some years ago and had all the wife's jewellery nicked. bad enough for her to lose it all, but she had a hell of a job getting used to the fact that someone broke into our sanctuary (nightmares galore).
But great that you're getting back into the swing of it.
If you don't know where you're going, you'll never get there.

i like ibenez guitars,i think i had a cheaper one back in the day.i like thin proile necks, and i do like floating bridges so no prob there.
all my prs guitars, they all had floating bridges and i swear never had a problem with the tuneing,it stayed in tune really well.all i know are prs guitars.i have too get to a music store, there arent any close to me.so i need to make a day of it and go to GC.thats it,or buy another prs.maybe ill just go nuts at AMS and buy two guitars and an amp,im thinking of the marshall jvm/dsl.either one would be cool.peace my friend, axe.btw give that site a look, even just for the fun of it.what i found cool about it,they tab all 7 modes and on each mode they it were you can listen to it and get it in ur head.then theres a backing track for each mod to play over.thats pretty cool.oh and there is a sample of each mod and scale of someone playing it to give u an idea what it sounds like in a solo.i know you have all this down, but its pretty cool for ppl who are just learnin mods scales ect.

Oh, I don't have this all down yet by any means! :) I recently got a book called "Modes for Guitar" by Tom Kolb (you can check it out on Amazon by clicking here ). Its pretty much exactly what you describe... included is a CD that has all the audio examples of what he shows in the book, played at both half and full speed. It also includes a play-along backing track for every mode. Really a great resource.

One tool I've found helpful for learning modes is simply knowing the 7 three-note-per-string patterns. Each pattern represents a mode, so when you know the seven patterns, you can use them to instantly figure out a mode. Want to hear what G Lydian sounds like over a backing track? Just play pattern 4 with root note of G, and you're off to the races.

Eventually, the goal is to see each mode you're playing across the entire fretboard without having to "extrapolate" by thinking of it as another scale... for instance, instead of thinking "A Dorian is just like G major...", just be able to look at an A note, and see the Dorian scale around it. That takes time. Jamming to backing tracks helps tons. I think one misconception with modes is that they are these magical "plug-n-play" devices... they're not. The backing track is everything. If the chords you're trying to solo over are not compatible with the mode, its probably not going to sound the way you want. You can write chord progressions that are tailor made for a specific mode, which is exactly what the pros do. It is fun at times to see how far you can push different modes over a chord progression or bass line. The less defined the chords or bass line, the easier it will be to fit different modes over it, but it also lessens the impact of the overall sound... kind of a trade off. Fun to experiment with though!

What site are you talking about, Axe?

I had NPR on for a few minutes the other night and an "I Love Jazz" or some such show was playing. The two 'hosts' were trying to explain modes and boy...did they blow it! Or so it sounded to me. :)
