Axe, I think you should look at Ibanez, and some of the other similar brands, such as Jackson and LTD... they all offer really well constructed guitars under $1K, and sometimes there are great deals to be had. I picked up a made in Japan Jackson a few years back at Guitar Center... retailed I think for $799, then went on sale for $499, but the day I bought it, it was being cleared out at $300. It does have a floating bridge, but it still holds its tuning really well... just as good as my other guitars if I don't use the whammy bar much.

You can get a fixed bridge from all those brands though... then you've got a guitar that you don't have too much invested in. The Jackson I have plays great and sounds really good... if you were in Portland Oregon I'd happily lend it to you. Anyways, give those brands a look and see what you think. I think you might be really happy with a guitar from one of them.
