Are you playing it as a barre chord, or as an open chord?

I don't exactly know what that means, but I think it's an open? not sure, but I get my fingers all mixed up when attempting it.
I don't want to take classes on guitar, but I'm trying really hard to learn at home .

when did you start palying? Based on your answer, you just started. The barre chords are all the chords in which you use your index finger to cover all 6 strings in the same fret, ( just like a barre, thats why they re called barre chords ) and the other three fingers in the other frets. All the other chords are called "open" chords, because you use the fingers to cover only some of the strings, and the others will be played as "open strings".
Go to the basic level 2 and you will understand better what I m saying.
Now, if you just started to learn guitar and what you re trying to do is a barre chord, it is perfectly normal that you will find it very hard.. dont be frustrated or worry, it just take some time and practice, your left hand will get stronger and it will became easy, like any other thing.

Try 'Am' first, but using your 4th, pinky, and 3rd fingers (keeping your index finger free). When you can do that, slide it down 2 frets to the Bm position, and add the index finger onto the e string (or across all the strings as a barre).

Well you have certainly jumped in at the deep end my friend, but since you are learning this chord, it's worth persisting, I kept away from it for ages because I did not like to play it because I too struggled with it.

I then wanted to play Tequilla Sunrise, The Bm is right there, so I decided to learn the chord and boy did I find it hard (been playing 5 years), it was not the technical bit of where to put the fingers but changing quickly from chord to chord and singing all at once did my nut in, it will give you imense satisfaction when you can just change to a Bm without looking.

It will also take time and patience and practice. Good luck
