Begginer Buying a guitar
Hello i am a complete beginner looking to learn how to play guitar. I like metal music so i would like to learn how to play an electric guitar. I have 2 questions. Should i start off with an electric guitar or an acoustic? Also how effective is this site in teaching students that have never held a guitar?
Thanks

Well, I'll give the obvious answer to that. If you would like to learn to play the electric guitar (and you want to play metal) then I'd think you'd want to start off with an electric guitar.

Extremely effective. I haven't been at the guitar long, and started in more or less the same boat. The "Guitar Fundamentals" course are in sequence, and one of the first literally IS "How to hold the guitar". The assumption is you know absolutely nothing, and they start there with Christopher leading your through everything you need to know in an ordered manner.

I started on an ibanez Gio and still play it today its a good guitar for the price. I think the grx20 is slightly better but not sure. Just as important you'll need a good amp. I like the line 6 stuff my self. Ibanez and line 6 is a good set up for heavier stuff. Other types of music will sound decent as well.

If you are serious about learning and know you will stick with it, you might want to consider forking out a little extra money for the good equipment. It will save you money later on down the road instead of buying a "beginners" set of gear and having to upgrade later (which you will). I personally don't like Line6 stuff, but that's just me.
Also, not saying your guitar choice is beginner quality. I haven't even looked at it, just making a general statement about buying gear for a beginner.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap guitar to start and immediately changed it. I bought a $100 Squier strat on Sale at Guitar Center on Labor Day weekend then started the beginners course. I then tried out a friends G&L Legacy and immediately noticed the difference. Took the Squier back and bought a new G&L 30th Anniversary Legacy and am loving every moment I get to practice with it. Having good gear makes all the difference in the world.

First off, Guitar Center has a killer Ibanez RG120 with tremelo on sale right now for $179.00. I just bought one.
Second, they have a Fender Mustang 1 amp on sale for $99 bucks.
If you buy with Guitar Center, they now have a trade up policy. You can bring your used equipment in and trade it in on better equipment if you need to.
I am one who believes that you should get good equipment at the best price because you never know if you will put the guitar down after a couple of months and decide not to keep playing. Why pay a thousand bucks on something your not sure you will keep playing.
Contrary to popular belief; the only way to be a good guitar player is to practice-practice-practice.
I wish we had a site this when I began playing guitar in Junior High School about 34 years ago.
I am going to sign up for this site because I want to learn some new songs, and some new riffs. You never know too much!
