Well, I'll give the obvious answer to that. If you would like to learn to play the electric guitar (and you want to play metal) then I'd think you'd want to start off with an electric guitar.

Extremely effective. I haven't been at the guitar long, and started in more or less the same boat. The "Guitar Fundamentals" course are in sequence, and one of the first literally IS "How to hold the guitar". The assumption is you know absolutely nothing, and they start there with Christopher leading your through everything you need to know in an ordered manner.
