Hi guys I was wondering of anyone could give me info on how to play similar to Alex's style and how I can practice it. I love his style and really want to master it. Could anyone help?

That's a great question. He's one of my all time favorites. A VERY under appreciated guitarist. Just a master.

Honestly, all it takes is to just learn what guitar parts you like in the songs. Once you learn enough, youll automatically understand how to produce the style.

For instance, Marty Friedman solos in old megadeth were quite unique, and I wanted to know what he was doing so I could incorporate that sound in my own way for my own material. So I simply learned the solos! I now understand his style, thats all there is to it.

For Rush, there should be plenty of tabs out there on the internet you can learn from. I would recommend a guitar pro/powertabs type tabulature program, thats where the good accurate tabs are.

What Jarsew said is very very appropriate. The only thing I would add to it is, that you need to learn the neck of the guitar also, so that you know where and what and how the solos are being done. Learning the neck of the guitar is so important, that it cant be said enough.
I learned some srv stuff note for note, and it was great. But then I realized that I didnt know anything beyond the exact solo. I need to learn what I was playing, and that really opened my eyes as to how solos were created. There is no easy way, but if you really sit down and start learning the guitar, instead of only how to play a solo, things will really snowball for you.

Thanks but what do you mean by learning the neck of the guitar like learning modes and every note on it? Something like that?

Good suggestion! Anyone recommend any other ways I can learn to incorporate his style in my playing? Just trying to get all the help I can get.
