New here and in Iraq
Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself here real quick.. I'm currently on my 10th deployment and in Iraq on this one so... I've taken up guitar a little more seriousely as of now. I know basic cords, can listen to a song and eventually pick out some of it but I'd say my hardest hurdle to overcome is the fact that I've played piano for 20 years and still have a hard time with making up my own stuff on the guitar. I'm trying to get into the blues acoustic and figured I'd start here with what some of you think about the best way to start in that realm of playing. Also, due to internet being extremely slow sometimes, is there a better way to utilize this site and not have to "download" the lessons, rather have a disc or two sent to me here? I don't care about cost for sending it really, just need something a little more efficient is all :D Ok well, I hope you all have a great one and any advice, knowledge you feel like sharing is completely welcome. Take care

Hey Echo2
Is that ok to shorten it up to that? I'm ex Navy so, not sure you're going to give a squid any slack. :p
You mentioned that you've got 20 years of piano, but having a hard time coming up with anything on guitar. I would have thought that would have helped...
You'll come across one of the instructors, Chris, he's also heavy into piano, maybe he will help you cut through the roadblock.
As far as getting a CD/DVD? I can't answer that one.

Best place to start...start from the very beginning, it's a very good place to start...(yes, now I have the Sound of Music in my head...and now you do too ;) )
Anyway, right here is your path:
http://www.guitartricks.com/corelearningsystem.php
While some of the concepts in these will be familiar from a musical perspective, it will help you translate that knowledge to the shapes on guitar. Fundamentals 1 and 2 set you up to go forward.
I see piano as very linear and guitar as more driven by pattern. While it may not be literally true, it helped me get how guitar worked as essentially a series of patterns that make up scales, modes and chords. I think once you get past how the piano and guitar are different animals that that have the same core theory, it will be pretty darn easy for you.
On a side note: Thanks for your service. Your sacrifice is appreciate.
Heck, I'll even say that to Rick. Thanks brother...I'll take back at least one disparaging thing I said ;)

Yeah when you mention the piano it is easier to play the guitar in reference to reading music, and knowing wat a chord is supposed to sound like. I guess what I was meaning is mre on the lines of.. I like to play with the piano, not just always play the exact notes listed, so for the guitar, all those trills, hammerons, sliding and basically the tricks to add extra flavor to it all is what I'm struggling with.. I will start at the beginning like you said though. I was just trying to be an impatient adult that dislikes a 4 year old doing better than me :P I still would like to find a possible dvd or something of that nature though.. easier for me to play/rewind, etc... and yeah its ok to shorten my name squid :P haha.. thanks for your service as well brother

Let me say first thank you for your service to this country.
Not too sure honestly about your questions, but I'm sure between this community and self-dedication, anything is possible. :)

Reputation is what other perceive you as being, and their opinion may be right or wrong. Character, however, is what you really are, and nobody truly knows that but you. But you are what matters most. - John Wooden

Welcome aboard and like the others, thanks for the service to our country..
The floatilla arrives.. Another squid here...
I have never heard of a DVD for GuitarTricks.. You might try posting directly to Hanspeter Kruesi , Anders Mouridsen , Christopher Schlegel, Andy Gurley or Doug Fearman.. All are listed as blues instructors.. You could also ask Jon Broderick. He is the founder of GT.. Any of the great people above or on this site may point you in the right direction..
Christopher Schlegel has a piano instruction site at:
