Hello, I am new here, and new to guitar. I am halfway through the Fundimentals I course and have a question...

I've noticed that when I am playing notes, my picking hand's pinky is resting on the guitar body bellow the strings (when hitting individual strings), wasnt aware I was doing this until recently. I think its helping to orient my hand to the strings.

I was looking at the Ace of Spades tutorial by Lawrence Katz and it seems that he does this too. It looks like he's even taken some of the finish off the guitar because of it

My question is, is this a bad habit that I should try to stop?

I presume you mean your picking hand, not your fretting hand? In which case,
it's perfectly normal, a lot of people do it (probably more than don't).v

If not, you're doing something REALLY Weird

That's one of those things that people/books will tell you is a "bad habit" and you should play with your hand closed, but everyone does it. It's about comfort. What you DON'T want to do, is get into the habit of where you can ONLY play with it there. A planted pinky acts as an anchor to stabilize your hand, or even like you said, to orient it.

I have a similar habit, I do not put my pinky on the body I kind of hook the high E string with it. It does not cause me any trouble playing and helps me stay oriented with where I am picking without having to look so I see no reason to stop doing it.

I have been studying some of the great blues guitarists and they ALL have little things like that, that they do. Most of it comes from having little to no knowledge at all of actual "proper" mechanics or music theory. None the less they are still some of the greatest players this world has ever known.

I think that is one of the beautiful things about the guitar. While the world's musically educated have determined what is to be considered "proper", there is nothing stopping you from doing it your own way and being wonderful! An example would be Albert King, a left handed guitar player who played a right handed instrument by flipping it upside down. By doing this and fretting with his right hand the man was able to do some crazy bends!

To sum all of this up, if it doesn't cause you a problem then don't worry about it.
God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run”
Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”
God says, “Out on Highway 61”

Ya I sometimes hook the E string too, works especially good if you're also trying to mute that string.
