That's one of those things that people/books will tell you is a "bad habit" and you should play with your hand closed, but everyone does it. It's about comfort. What you DON'T want to do, is get into the habit of where you can ONLY play with it there. A planted pinky acts as an anchor to stabilize your hand, or even like you said, to orient it.
