My name is Mike and I am a new guitar player. I have learned alot over the past year. I have been teaching myself, but I have gotten to a point were I thought it would be better to get some instruction. I found guitar tricks and I currently have a free membership. I dont know if I will pay for a full membership yet. I am still getting use to the site.

Everything looks great so far, but I just haven mad up my mind yet. Can anyone share some advise with me, and maybe tell me about some of your experiences on the site.

Hi Mike,

Well, of course I think you should join us, but then I guess I am biased. ;)

There is currently a discussion on this topic going on on our GT Facebook Page ("should I join or should I not?"). You might enjoy checking it out:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/GuitarTrickscom/93990407874?ref=mf

Meanwhile, from the perspective of one of the GT Instructors, I think this is an awesome site for you at your stage of learning. You can check in and make sure the skills and habits you've developed so far on your own are in good shape, and you can move beyond your current skill level fast by finding your way to the tutorials and lessons that suit your interests and skills.

There is a lot here.

And the instructors and members are a friendly bunch, happy to help.

It's really a small commitment to give it a try for just one month. And it'll be worth it. :)
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

I think you should give it a go. I was self taught picking up things all over the net, but go to the point where my learning wasn't focused so I recently joined GT. The best thing guitartricks has going for it is a ciriculum to follow, as well as the videos are one on one spoken format, so its like you are getting a private lesson. I do think they need to provide more resources to apply the things you are learning, but you can usually find it on the net.

I would recommend if you join to start at the Fundementals(At least listen to them) and figure out where your playing level is - there are also a few things you will pick up along the way.

There is a lot a person can pick up from Guitartricks. I subscribed over a year ago. My only bitch is the lessons take too long to download. Also, there are more lessons you can access for free online than you will ever need. D.J.

Hi D.J. and all,

The download time generally has to do with two factors: the resolution quality you select, and, the nature of your computer speed and internet connection.

Tips: if the lessons are downloading too slowly for you, try selecting the Low-Res option, press Play, then press Pause. Let the video load in, and then press play once again. You should then be able to watch it uninterrupted.

Not here, but at other sites, download times were killing me as well. Then again , I had dia-up (yeah, they still have that) and my computer only had 1gb harddrive.
I now have 2 gb and high speed internet, along with an external harddrive to keep my current system running smooth and unclogged, and what a difference. Other factors to consider with slow download times are the higher your security system settings, this tends to slow your downloads, as well as the type of security software your using. Two popular types, Nortin and Mcafee are very good at what they do, but their software really does slow down your system.

I initially was hesitant to spend the cash so signed up for the monthly subscription knowing that I could cancel it if I didn't like it.

Well, after 2-3 weeks cancelled the monthly and signed up for a year right away! It really is a bit amazing when you take a step back and look at all you get. The ability to get professional grade lessons at your own pace is sweet, then adding in the ability to take a lesson over and over (and in my case 195.3 times on average to get it right) also makes it worth it in my opinion. Oh, and being able to dl the lessons and view offline is excellent for one who was to travel now and again.

I think the biggest selling point, and my wife will testify, is simply this...

I picked up a guitar a little later in my life than I should have. With work, don't have time for one on one lessons even if I could find a decent instructor in my area. Struggled on my own for the first 6 months where if the wife or the critters saw the guitar in my hands it was an all out frenzy to see which of em could get out of ear shot first! :) Which I will admit was quite fun to watch from my viewpoint!

Now, after maybe 2 months, the pups no longer run and actually seem to enjoy the noise I make, and all the wife says is "Can you turn it down a bit?"

So in a nutshell, after this long winded post, as if you haven't guessed by now, it is certainly worth it. The instructors just plain rock, the interface is easy and intuitive, and the "Beagle from Hell!" endorses it with 5 howls of approval :)
It's better to regret something that you have done than something you haven't.

Hello Everyone,
Like Lisa, I guess my opinion is a bit biased, but to be perfectly honest there's no way a private instructor could give you all that will be at your finger tips immediately. It would take them years to teach all this stuff that's a few clicks away, and the price would be outrageous.

Plus being able to contact the instructors here in the forum, and have one, or all of us respond to your post. Sometimes we work a little more than we want, but we still get on here and answer questions from members. A full access member can also post messages, or questions in any instructor's forum.

I hope you decide to join us as a full access member, and I don't think you would be disappointed in any way.
