Hi, hi... trying to learn how to play for real. Self-taught using a book about 8 or 9 years ago but stopped once it came to finger picking and F chords. Decided I still really want to learn how to play. After several bad experiences trying to find an instructor on Craig's List and also having difficulty finding a place to take lessons in my city I decided to give this website a try. Seems excellent. Looking forward to starting Fundamentals 1.

Nancy,
Keep working on the f chord. People told me to barre it to make it easier. I wanted to do it the right way and just worked on it a couple of minutes a day and after a while it seems pretty easy now. I took lessons for about 2 months and the guy just kept asking me what I wanted to play. I used the metronome which I thought was crazy but it increased my speed tremendously. Don't give up.

Thanks for the response... I'm actually starting over... really interested in improving my technique (currently = "sloppy as all heck") and learning more about theory. Metronomes are a wonderful thing... I play the piano for years and it's definitely great for drilling and speed building!

Welcome to the site. I just did a quick search on "f chord" and came up with 308 posts! You are not alone. :)
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.

Hey NancyKz,
I guess it is probaly the hardest part of learning, but it can open so many doors. I would practice it with a full bar, and after getting used to that try to practice the other position too. The one where you only bar the 1st, and 2nd string, and there are other positions to learn later too.

It's been SOOO long ago, but now that this discussion started, wow, I DO remember having trouble with that F chord. I also remember the notorious B-7th. Learning that particular one opened up countless songs to me. That F-chord as you know, when you do the grunt work involved will open the rest of the neck to you in many ways. I definitely remember that F with "The Wind Cries Mary" by Hendrix. You slide that F to the Gb then to the G positions. You can't play THAT song without a good 'ol F-chord!
Best wishes Nancy

Loving all these comments on the F chord... my guitar teacher (I found one in town finally but still use the online course because I can redo as much as I want) taught me a chord that I can use in place of F as we work on figuring out how to get it down. I also just bought my first new guitar (I used to use my sister's used guitar from the early 80's and sometimes I play my husband's Martin but it's impossible to get a clean sound (you have to press way too hard) that I love the size and feel of which is really helping.
