Not too hot on theory myself but Satch doesnt seem to use any one particular scale. One thing that I know he does do is shift in and out of modes and drops in a lot of chromatics/accidentals when he is doing pentatonic runs. Basically, try playing a lick in a pentatonic scale anywhere on the fretboard over a backing track. Then play the same progression up a note, then up 2 notes etc - that's the basic concept of modes. You get totally different flavours for the same grouping of tones/semi-tones. Experiment with this and you will see a lot of where Satch gets his sounds from.

so your saying satch uses the pentatonic approach rather than the three note per string approach?

Not at all, he mixes pentatonics with major and minor scales and quite often uses Eastern scales such as Arabian and Dorian. He also uses four note per string runs very often as well as mixing them up with two and three note runs. The trick to Satch is he uses pentatonics sparingly and usually drops them in at the begining or end of a run involves something comepletely different. This keeps things fresh and gets him away from sounding like most other players out there. His biggest weapon is the use of modes in his solos, switching frequently to change the feel of his solos.

clever bastard lol there must be at some point where he lets go i think hes starting to open up now recently because hes learnt almost everything. if uve seen satriani live dvd ull get what i mean there more jamming than structure compared to san franscisco dvd. anyway as for modes ive gone through them so many times i understand what they are i know how to play them its just the context and changing from one mode to the next seems like miles away for me. and especially doing the ryhtyms he does in his licks. quintuplets and all.

Try to use the Lydian mode. For instance, play the 6th string open (E) and on the other strings play a scale with the notes E F# G# A# B C# D# E. This has a typical Satch feel.
BTW Satch uses a lot of exotic scales & modes, and also mixes them. If you search on youtube, there are a couple of videos in which Satch himself explain how he uses the modes.
