I've been doing miserable on chords because of my fat fingers. Or as I like to call them "MANLY" fingers. A friend of mine told me that if I wrapped tape around my fingers real tight it would help tremendously. sounded reasonable to me. Have any of you heard of this technique?

Wrapping anything tightly around your fingers will stop blood from circulating, which is not a good idea. 'Fat' fingers are a whole lot better than none at all.

Keep your fingers - lose the idiot 'friend'.

Try and play on guitars with fatter necks. The strings are spaced wider and will make fretting easier for you.

Taping your fingers really tight doesn't even SOUND like a good idea....never mind the fact that that is not good for your fingers. Just think about how you will actually be able to play. You will not have the same mobility/dexterity if you bind your fingers up. Sorry, but your friend is as sharp as a marble.

Forget the tape, it will damage the blood vessels in your fingers. Try playing off necks with wider fretboards and bigger frets (eg Dunlop 6000's). No two people play the guitar exactly the same and some vary considerably - as my dad would say "every cripple has his own way of walking". Basically teach yourself your own way and forget what the guy with the tape says;-)

I'm with these guys. No tape. No sense in taking a chance on damaging the nerve endings in your fingers. You do that and you'll find playing the guitar very, very difficult. Like they said, find the right guitar. You'll be much happier in the end. :)

You could wrap tape around your fingers....It would only last five minutes at the most. so yeah...not a good idea.

Ibanez is a good brand to try for a wider neck. I have an RG770 with the Wizard neck and I can really tell the difference between it and my fender. The strings are much farther apart to me. But the Fretboard is wider because of this so if you are used to wrapping your thumb around the top this can be a bit harder with the Wizard neck.
