Forget the tape, it will damage the blood vessels in your fingers. Try playing off necks with wider fretboards and bigger frets (eg Dunlop 6000's). No two people play the guitar exactly the same and some vary considerably - as my dad would say "every cripple has his own way of walking". Basically teach yourself your own way and forget what the guy with the tape says;-)
