[FONT=Arial]Ok, so I am a beginner guitarist who has been teaching myself off the internet. I have a pretty crappy acoustic guitar and I am looking for a cheap but good quality electric guitar, and an small amp. I am new to guitars so I am looking for some help.

I like to play Punk/Rock sort of songs, so if anyone has any suggestions on what to look for or a good beginner guitar that would be awesome.

Depending on your budget, you have a few good guitar manufacturer you can look at.

If you're into the classic looking guitars, you can take a lot at Epiphone. They carry classic models like the Les Paul and my favorite... The SG :)

There's another company that I like a lot. Schecter. They have some very nice entry level guitars. Sure they also make high end ones but the cheaper models were surprisingly well made.

Then for an amp I'de suggest something like a Spider III series or a Roland Cube series. They have built-in effects that can save you a great deal of money when you start.

Except for the Roland Cube, I have owned all of them so I can safely recommend them.

I don't have a set budget but I need a cheap guitar that won't bust in a week. ;)
I don't really like the classical look though. I was checking out some gutairs though and the Fender Start looked good. Is that a good choice?

lets start with amps. i just bought a vox ad30vt which is a tube amp with built in effects and amp models. its a good amp and i got it with the optional footswitch for $300 (dam california taxes) . marshall makes some good solid state amps for cheap but most dont have built in effects so if you want those youll need a multi processor or pedals.

guitars.
i hear ok things from squire(they're made by fender) but they are cheap. ibanez makes some ok models. i have the cheapest one they make (gax20 i think it is $150) its been an ok guitar for about 8 years now right now it doesnt have a pickguard or pickups and its strung left handed but its still an ok guitar.
i know several compainies sell packages, amp guitar tuner gigbag, but i cant really tell you any thing about their quality. ibanez epiphone squire i know for sure sell them. (id go for the ibanez artist series (looks kind of like a les paul double cutaway) pack if they still make it)
They say the END is near, but I'm Tired of waiting.

I would save up for maybe an Epiphone G-400 SG (300 USD) Epiphone makes great guitars for your money. As a starter amp I would reccomend the Line 6 Spider III. They make those from 30 watts all the way to 150 watts for a good price. If you start out with that setup, I think that you should progress quickly and have fun. Also, if you have the patience to save up, you could get the Epiphone Les Paul. I own one, and it is amazing!

To get one for cheap try a squier strat pack. Go to music123.com to check one out. It usually comes with the guitar, strap, picks, amp, cord, and a learn how to play book of some sort. All this usually adds up to at the most $200.

By the way, it's honestly not a bad guitar if that's what you're wondering. I mean there are definitely better but this isn't a cheap (quality) guitar by any means.

I'd go for a squire strat too - get the standard though, not the affinty. A Line 6 spider amp would probably be a better idea than the bundle - that way you get loads of effects to play with too... :D

I'm an Ibanez freak, but to be totally honest I don't think their lower end guitars are all that great....

I have finally gotten a budget. It isn't a very stirct one, but it pretty small. It is about $250. I can spend a bit more but rather I didn't.

Oh and thanks for all of your replys and keep them coming. =)

haha we're actually in the same boat man. Ive been playing an old washburn accoustic that i bought from target 4 months ago and now Im looking into electrics too.

Ive had a lot of help from friends of mine who are in various bands and have a lot of experience. We've gone to a couple music stores and ive done a TON of research online (probably sounds familiar) and here is what Ive learned:

Go to a music store with some friends who know about guitars and then just play! Look at what the store has, pick guitars that look good first, then play them until you find one that fits your style. *my main criteria was how easy the size of the neck/frets made it for me to play faster songs* your friends can help you with the tech stuff. And if you dont have any guitar friends just ask a salesman. As for amps i recommend a Roland Micro Cube - if you can find one. There pretty popular because of how cheap they are for their quality.

As an end note I chose a Schecter C-1 Shedevil and a Micro Cube. I wish you luck in your search!
