lets start with amps. i just bought a vox ad30vt which is a tube amp with built in effects and amp models. its a good amp and i got it with the optional footswitch for $300 (dam california taxes) . marshall makes some good solid state amps for cheap but most dont have built in effects so if you want those youll need a multi processor or pedals.

guitars.
i hear ok things from squire(they're made by fender) but they are cheap. ibanez makes some ok models. i have the cheapest one they make (gax20 i think it is $150) its been an ok guitar for about 8 years now right now it doesnt have a pickguard or pickups and its strung left handed but its still an ok guitar.
i know several compainies sell packages, amp guitar tuner gigbag, but i cant really tell you any thing about their quality. ibanez epiphone squire i know for sure sell them. (id go for the ibanez artist series (looks kind of like a les paul double cutaway) pack if they still make it)
