Well, I would think that you've come to the right place. There are plenty of tutorials on GT that can answer most of your questions. Stick around, I am certain that the gurus will stop by with some good information for you.

Welcome to GT. Enjoy. :)

How did you learn the chords, did someone teach you?

If so... Ask them to teach you to read sheet music/tabs. Once you get the basic idea, it's pretty easy! ;)

Learn the Major scale! Learn it in all keys, learn theory so you can understand how chords are built and how things fit together. Play along with CDs, MP3s, Midis, Jam tracks. That will help you develop on your own, you could be practicing scales, picking technique, left hand technique, learning theory. Play along with the TV, you can often hear cool licks by Steve Lukather and others. I will say there is no replacement for a good teacher!
Post questions, I posted questions to several different forums and received the best information here at guitartricks.com by far!
Most important: Remember it's a lifelong journey! The more you put into it the more you'll get out of it! Have Fun!

acoustic15, it all depends what you wanna play.

Playing guitar is just like having a job. You'll like it if you have more things you like about it than things you hate. So the first thing you wanna address is, What do i want to play?

You were saying that you've been playing for a couple of months, that's great! Keep it up. My question is what have you liked the most so far?

From what I read in your post you'd like to learn how to read music and play songs.

If you have full access here you can read Christopher Schlegel on reading music. It should tell you everything you need.

As far as playing songs, you say you know chords. Awesome! A song can often be broken down into chord progression and strumming patterns. You have the basic knowledge to start working on these two. Strumming pattern will work on your right hand while chord progression will focus on your left hand.

Practicing chord progression will help you learn songs more easily. Most beginner's know their chords but have a difficult time moving from one to another. You want to work on that.

Also, when you have a few strumming pattern behind your belt, you'll be able to recognize what the guitar player is doing. It's going to be a lot easier to remember a rhythm if you can understand the chord progression and the strumming patterns.

Some lessons on strumming patterns :

I'm not sure if you have access to the lessons on GT but if you don't, I hope I was able to a least point you in the right direction.

Keep it up, learning guitar is all about dedication and passion
