Learn the Major scale! Learn it in all keys, learn theory so you can understand how chords are built and how things fit together. Play along with CDs, MP3s, Midis, Jam tracks. That will help you develop on your own, you could be practicing scales, picking technique, left hand technique, learning theory. Play along with the TV, you can often hear cool licks by Steve Lukather and others. I will say there is no replacement for a good teacher!
