Yup. He's the man. First whipping some serious butt in the Karate Kid movies and then taking Vai to school in a head cutting contest in front of Ol' Scratch like that... yes sir!

I'd say who my favorite guitarist is, but I'll spare everyone the hastle of mentioning his name another time. :D Aside from though who shall not be named, I have really been digging Doyle Bramhall II lately. Along with John Mayer, all of those guys are up there in my book.

Eliot Fisk is the best classical guitarist I am aware of. As mentioned about the Paganini Caprice No. 5 used in the "Crossroads" movie, Fisk does not only the entire 5th caprice on solo guitar ... he does the entire series of 24 caprices.

You can hear Caprice No. 5 on that page. Fisk is so good it's astonishing.

On electric guitar, very few people will ever approach the level of Shawn Lane. Search YouTube.com or google him. Unbelievable technique.

Steve Vai. Not my favorite player, but he's one of the few that can play any style of music on guitar....He can even tear a slide up...

Kirk Hammett is the best guitar player in my opinion. He helped revolutionize metal in the Ride the Lightning alblum, and kicked butt in the Master of Puppets alblum. Also, have you heard his solo's, they totally rock.

There is no best guitarist. There are only those that excell in whatever style they chose. Has anybody ever heard of Michael Landau? What about Larry Carlton or Robben Ford. Steve Vai blows me away but is he the best jazz player? Andres Segovia was a master but there are probably dozens of classical players that would play rings around him. Anybody ever heard of Jimmy Vivino or Drew Zing? Talk about some harmonic knowledge.

The truth is that any one of these guys is great and you can't say any one of them is best. I think the best players are those that can contribute something positive to whatever they're playing at any particular moment.

Oh rah! Well said and I agree. I have heard of Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Great players. Can't say I've heard of the others you mentioned but I just may have to look them up. :)

Read who wrote the songs on those albums... See how little input Hammett had not to mention his sloppy technique.
I don't mind people thinking his the best (even tho IMO his rubbish) but saying HE revolutionized metal :(

Any way listening to Cacophony as of late Jason Becker just  And I believe he was 17 when he recorded Speed Metal Symphony.

Sad story, He got Diagnosed with ALS and got given a few years to live but the condition has stabilized after it took his ability to move. These days he is an a wheel chair unable to move (with exception to his eyes) He still writes music now that shows his dedication and love for it.
