Hmm. Very interesting choices! Don't see many mentions of either Gatton or Anderson 'round the boards. A tip of the hat to you my friend. Both exceptional guitar players. :)

Best "ever"? No idea.. but here are the guitarist I enjoy listening to, playing along with (in my bedroom of course, haha) and have influenced my playing style:

1. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
2. Carlos Santana
3. Steve Morse (current Deep Purple guitarist, originally from Lynnard Skynnard)
4. Angus Young (AC/DC)
5. Jimi Hendrix
6. Joe Satriani

and many others...

A completely unknown, to me, guitarist that I have been trying to find more songs with him playing in is Tim Renwick. He has played in so many bands and worked on so many albums that it's seriously not funny.. My first meeting with Tim was on the Pink Floyd PULSE Live DVD.. though now I have heard some of the other songs he's played on, I know that I have heard him many times before. On the DVD, he is just wonderful to listen to.. unfortunately it's David Gilmour that everyone is there to see, so Tim doesn't get to play a lot during that gig.

Too bad he doesn't share the spotlight like Clapton. Not that I was there to see Derek or Doyle, but looking back on things, it was such an awesome show.

Theres gotta be a better way to say that.

Yes I am amazed how little known these players are. I guess stylistically they differ so much from the rock virtuosos (Vai, Malmsteen, etc), that the "shredders" don't find their way to them. Shame, as these guys are as technically as virtuostic as anyone -

There's this great guitarist called Andy McKee. He's got his own sorta style of playing that is very unique to me.. at least I have never seen someone do what he can do with a guitar. Here's a couple of YouTube links to his songs: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nmE3QaGetn4

There's a bunch more of his on youtube as well. I guess it would be called homegrown acoustic or I suppose folk acoustic.. or may be something else.. not too good with putting things into genres.. In anycase, this is definitely worth a look at just to see what he can do..

This clip is of Tim Renwick playing a solo during Pink Floyd's pulse tour.. I consider this to be one of the highlights of the whole concert because it is what introduced me to this guy.. he's just awesome.. 'nuff said.. go and see it..

Ok so here's another contender that I just remembered and found some mp3s for. Alex Skolnick from Testament. Although I don't really like the current stuff, his stuff from the Souls of Black album released in 1990 was great.. Very Maelmsteen-like in many places.

Here's a youtube of my favourite song from that album:
