Help Me Find A New Electric

Hey, um i'm looking for a new electric guitar. I intend to use this one in band so its needs to be okay at metal, garage, phycedelic and a little prog. I would prefer something with humbuckers but sc's will be fine. I've been looking at Sg's, any idea how they would fare?

SG's are a widely used "rock" style guitar. They tend to have a bit thinner tone than the Les Pauls due to the smaller body mass. They're notoriously bad for touring though... Not that you're going to take it on any world wide tours... But they're not as ruggedly built as other guitars. I personally wouldn't waste my money on a true Gibson SG... If I ever bought an SG style guitar I'd buy an Epiphone SG-400 in either Ivory or Black... the Ivory one is super sexy: http://cgi.ebay.com/Epiphone-SG-400-CUSTOM-G-400-Antique-Ivory-Guitar-NEW_W0QQitemZ120105308506QQihZ002QQcategoryZ33037QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
In the end it's whatever you want... What's your price range? Finding a guitar that you like isn't nearly the battle of it... Finding a guitar that you like AND can afford is the real battle to win... Beyond that getting the most bang for your buck is priority as well... You wight want to also check out the Schecter C-1 series of guitars... The Classics come stock with Seymour Duncan JB/59 humbuckers, which are pretty much the essential versatile rock pickup these days.

I second the Shecters. They are built very well, play great, and sound good, especially considering the low price tags they put on them.

I don't like SG's, very small and light, but awkward
if you always take the lazy route

I dont like Sg's...They are poorly made...the neck joint is extremely weak.
look at Schecters, they make some awesome guitars...as do Cort, Epiphone, PRS,we could name brands forever.
how much are you looking to spend on this venture?

Les Pauls sound like a good bet for you.
I have an Agile SG, which sounds and plays amazingly.

Opinions on the best versatile rock guitar will vary from person to person, so if you ask the question, you'll probably have every brand on the market named to you :D. Each has their merits, and there are certainly some that are more popular than others, but in the end, it's just a matter of getting down to the music shop and trying the most appealing ones for yourself.
Just to throw another name into the mix, though - ESP. People think of them as metal guitars, but they're actually very versatile - I have a modestly-priced Eclipse and it's great for everything from pop to funk as well as blues, hard rock and metal. There's always the Vipers if you like the SG look, and the new PB series looks sweet as well.
