Opinions on the best versatile rock guitar will vary from person to person, so if you ask the question, you'll probably have every brand on the market named to you :D. Each has their merits, and there are certainly some that are more popular than others, but in the end, it's just a matter of getting down to the music shop and trying the most appealing ones for yourself.

Just to throw another name into the mix, though - ESP. People think of them as metal guitars, but they're actually very versatile - I have a modestly-priced Eclipse and it's great for everything from pop to funk as well as blues, hard rock and metal. There's always the Vipers if you like the SG look, and the new PB series looks sweet as well.
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.
