Is that some kind of new buzz word or something?
I've never even heard of it before.

Call and Response was I think started in the church. Choirs whould sing one part (the call) and the congregation would reply with another bit (the response) Now its not limited to church music.

One example that comes to mind is Tommy James and The Shondells tune Mony Mony. Specifically the part that goes "I say yeh......Yeh....Yeh .....Yeh

well you get the idea.

You're right. It goes hand in hand with the call and response from field bosses to the workers in the fields while working. The boss would call out a line and the workers would respond. It's the basic set up to the blues. It was also big in southern gosepl around the same time. When people started playing the blues, they were setting field 'hollas' to music. Call and response...call and response. When the blues went electric (essentially), the call still went out but the response was a blues lead line. B.B. King still plays in a style very much like that. If you listen to some of his tracks, you can hear it very clearly. His vocal call and his lead line 'response'. Guess that's when Lucille is talking back.

BB King is a great example of that style for sure. I hadn't ever really heard it called "call and response" before now but I see exactly what you're saying.

Most blues musicians use that style where they use their guitar to respond to the vocal lines of the music. I can't think of any blues off the top of my head that uses two vocalists using this... I'm sure their are literally thousands of bootleg collaborations of this sort of thing happening... but it's rare that a blues song is recorded with more than one vocalist.

I've pimped out Joe Bonamassa so much on this site I should be getting royalties from him.... but he blends a bit of a delta throw back blues style in his stuff quite often. A GREAT track to hear call and response on guitar by him is my all time favorite blues song "Blues Deluxe" by Joe Bonamassa...

Check this vid of him playing in Vegas with a 13 year old harmonica player from my hometown named LD Miller.... Him and LD do some call and response back and forth from guitar to harmonica that is pretty cool...

LD is also on JoBo's track "Your Funeral, My Trial" on his newest album...

Yeah, I've only recently discovered Bonamassa (within the past year or so) and you're right. He's an amazing guitarist. A real polished player who can still get down and dirty with the blues. He seems to be an amalgam of Chicago post-war electric, heart-felt Delta and Texas growler blues. Since SRV is long gone, he's a great guy to emulate if you're a blues man that's for sure.

It's not exactly blues per se ... But I've always liked "Minnie The Moocher" by Cab Calloway. He does a classic rendition in the original "Blues Brothers" movie. :)
