You're right. It goes hand in hand with the call and response from field bosses to the workers in the fields while working. The boss would call out a line and the workers would respond. It's the basic set up to the blues. It was also big in southern gosepl around the same time. When people started playing the blues, they were setting field 'hollas' to music. Call and response...call and response. When the blues went electric (essentially), the call still went out but the response was a blues lead line. B.B. King still plays in a style very much like that. If you listen to some of his tracks, you can hear it very clearly. His vocal call and his lead line 'response'. Guess that's when Lucille is talking back.
