I loved the Load/Reload albums... They were the first albums of Metallica that I really listened to growing up. Then my older brothers introduced me to Master of Puppets and I found the others on my own.

I agree, I liked the versatility that they possessed in the 90's. I loved the chunkyness of "Devil's Dance"... that slow chugging riff still sticks with me. Then songs like Memory Remains, Fuel, Unforgiven II, Low Man's Lyric, Hero of the Day, House That Jack Built, Better Than You, Where the Wild Things Are, Ain't my Bitch, 2x4... on and on... Those two albums had some of the better ROCK music of the mid 90's. To put out a killer rock album with a throw back metal vibe and new era rock feel in the time when grunge music ruled is pretty ballsy... They tried the same thing with St. Anger but I think it was just poorly executed...

People complain about the lack of solos... Load/Reload were both albums with minimum guitar solos, that didn't make them bad albums. Truthfully, a lot of Hammetts stuff on ...And Justice For All and Ride The Lightning comes out of nowhere and some of it sounds forced. I like fluidity in songs. Load/Reload had that... where solos were placed in the right places and left out of the places that they shouldn't have been. St. Anger was a yet a different direction and I commend them for going out on that limb that so few artists dare to go out on. It takes a big name like Metallica to put out an album that's trying to be as inventive as their attempt at St. Anger... Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynrd, Sabbath, Maiden.... they all do what they do well and I haven't seen any of them try to do anything THAT different in the last 25 years besides what sells their albums and what has been the natural evolution of music. Metallica tried to grab musical evolution by the balls and say "Hey, you're gonna go over here"... Obviously, musical evolution is a girl and has no balls... because she didn't follow. Metallica whiffed.

St. Anger wasn't a good album... but it was Metallica trying to step in a direction to reinvent metal... and you can't fault them for the attempt.

Load/Reload were both great rock albums. It'll be interesting to see which of the 3 heads of Metallica shows up on the next album... Will it be Alcoholica (80's), Rockaholica (90's), or What-the-hell-was-that-aholica (2000's)...

I saw that awhile back when it was first posted and I didn't think much of it... There's no gaurantee that it will sound anything like that on the album. Plus, it sounds like Hettfields voice is wrecked. I'm sure he'll have his vocal chords in much better shape to lay down good vocals. I more or less compared it to the version of "Fuel" that they played on the Cunning Stunts DVD... The DVD was shot on the tour that was promoting "Load" and they played a version of "Fuel" to start getting the fans hyped about "Reload"... At the time of them playing it they didn't even have a title for it and it sounded almost nothing like the final album version.

I guess I'm just trying to be an optimist. But it sounds like a decent start to something.

While i don't really like them anymore...And justice was my first 'good' cd. I could sing every single part off it. I used to stand in my room and pretend i was in metallica playing this cd.

Last night i watched a bio called 'when metallica ruled the world'. It was pretty cool. I gained a lot more respect for kirk. He seemed like a nice guy who didn't have any part in the constant bitching.

Not bad at all. I just hope the whole album doesn't turn out to be variations on that song, a la "St. Anger". James' voice was dodgy, and Lars sped up and slowed down a couple of times, as he is wont to do, but Rob and Kirk were playing really well.

100% agree. Rust In Peace is probably one of the best metal metal albums ever - I would go so far as to say it topped anything Metallica ever did musically. I still love Metallica though... pre Black album that is! And yes, I also agree, losing Marty Friedman was the biggest mistake Mustain ever made... pity.

Promising, should sound cool when recorded and mixed by Rick Rubin. Great to see fast solos back again - dodgy vocals though, I prefer the dirtier Justice For All style... a definite improvement over St Anger!

I, too, 100% agree! And I also think that leaving Megadeth was one of the biggest mistakes Marty ever made - he played all of his best solos with that band, IMO.

Man do I miss that cd. Gets me giddy just thinking about it. Rust In Peace is imo THE greatest metal album ever. Every single track was just balls to the wall.

Metallica and Megadeth... the two will forever be connected.

The mentioning of Megadeth and Mustaine in a Metallica conversation is as inevitable as death... It's going to happen regardless.

It just sucks how Megadeth is now better than ever, their commin out with a new album United Abominations, while Metallica is still struggleing to keep even the lightest metal head in grasp. Yet, there will always be 2 twice the hype over Metallica than 'Deth.

Better than ever may be a stretch. Let us not forget Rust In Peace. But you are correct. Megadeth really is a ton better yet Metallica is hyped like theres no tomorrow.

I don't really think Metallica is "hyped"... I think it's just one of those things where Metallica is the recognizable name. If you ask 10 average people who Metallica are they'll all know.... If you ask 10 average people who Megadeth is and maybe 2 or 3 will really know... Megadeth is one of those gritty bands that prides itself on gaining a fan base by actually touring and putting out albums... Where as Metallica has such a big name now they can just market their name and get exposure...

So I think it's more about the differences in marketing rather and the fact that Metallica is such a well known band... Not neccessarily that everyone holds them in such high regard... Especially after St. Anger...

I also think it has something to do with their popularity. I know a whole bunch of people that know about metallica and not so many people that know megadeth. ive read some forums that say megadeth is better that metallicas newer stuff. but if you compare their best songs from both bands i think metallica wins by far
