this might help get rid of some of your xmas cash
my suggestions are:
1. George Harrison-All Things Must Pass- you can riff for days with this
2. Neil Young- Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
3. Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon

I have these so tell about some i (we)don't know
oh yea----all Schmange music too ;)

Dark Side is my favourite to play along with, but you asked for others, so:

1: Piper At the Gates of Dawn. Great fun to experiment with weird noises along with, and conventional riffing and soloing sounds good with it as well.
2: The Inner Mounting Flame by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
3: The System Has Failed by Megadeth.

- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

Why, Floyd, of course! It's their first album, with the mighty Syd Barrett (RIP) on guitars and vocals.

Albums, eh? Hmmmm.......

To be honest, I can only remember ever jamming to one song, let alone album. It was "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" by Sonic Youth. A few of my friends and I went to my place during lunch one day and each of us grabbed an instrument. Luke, Andrew and myself had guitars (my acoustic and strat were in standard tuning; I played my hollowbody electric in CGCGCD tuning with a slide) and Michael played the keyboard.

I don't even know if you could call what we did "jamming." We each did our own thing, oblivious to the others and the song itself. It was just racket, basically, but somehow everything melded together. If you don't know the song, try downloading it, you'll see what I mean.

That was loads of fun.

If I can think of any actual jamming albums, though, I'll post 'em.

Van Halen's first album... great to jam to cause you can turn the balance to one speaker and get just the drums and bass. Same thing with a lot of early Beatles stuff.
City Boy is an amazing guitar band too with great harmonies. The song 'Cigarettes' is one of those classics with some great riffs.
Rush 'Hemishperes' or 2112 are kinda groovy.

...and some other bands I'd be suprised if anybody's even heard of...
Chilliwack, Brand X, The Box, Dixie Dregs, Harlequin, King Crimson, Missing Persons, Uzeb, The Tubes, Sweet. XTC.

I do remember some of those mentioned. I know of Dixie Dregs, King Crimson (Go Frip!), Missing Persons,The Tubes, Sweet and XTC.Can't say I know of City Boy. I've heard of Chilliwack and BrandX but I don't think I ever heard of any of their music.

Oh yeah, you can bring back some of that classic punk too; Gang of Four, The Five, Echo and Bunnymen, The Undead, Dead Kennedy's, Dead Milkmen, Butthole Surfers....

Oh man...sniff...that brings back some memories...okay, hazy, sort-of-memories...more flashes of scenes popping up through some seriously repressed nonsense of the 'good old days.'

I've heard of all of them except The Box, Dixie Dregs, and Uzeb. In fact, Harlequin is from Winnipeg, which is only about an hour from where I live. Small world!

Anybody ever hear of Bela Flek? (sp?)
It was this really weird band with a banjo player doing leads and the drummer/Bass player on an electronic kit built into his bass guitar or something. The music was like this weird combination of banjo and jazz. I remember seeing them on the Tonight Show like, 15 years ago and being blown away with how good they were.

Of course!! Similar to String Cheese Incident, Oysterhead/Phish, and Keller and the Keels. Got a real bluegrass feel to it... with a lot of different styles infused in it. Good stuff!

Sure. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. They are still out there. I hear them every now and again on my local NPR station. Really interesting stuff.

Megadeth-Rust In Peace
AC/DC-Any album, so long as its Back In Black or earlier. RIP Bon.
I don't really prefer their newer stuff, but Metallica's "Kill Em All" is also fun to jam along with. Nothing technically amazing there, but you're guaranteed to have some fun ripping the pentatonic in E.

From back when I started:
1. Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd (1st cd I ever bought!)
2. Led Zeppelin II-riffs galore...even the drum solo Moby Dick has a cool riff.
3. Slayer-South of Heaven-Thrash Metal 101

But nowadays I generally only use Media Player, and most recently a playlist called Study in Z, being all the ZZ Top songs I either know or want to learn.

King Crimson are one of my favourite bands!

I like Brand X as well, I've got Unorthodox Behaviour.

Dixie Dregs... the name rings a bell. Wasn't that Steve Morse's band?

And I learned about the Sweet from you and Doc Simon, when I asked who sang "Ballroom Blitz"!
