recording software
I was wondering if anybody knew any websites where I might find reviews and/or in-depth descriptions for different computer recording software. I have been looking at a few different programs, but I know little about them. Thanks a lot.

hmmm, i donno man.
harmonycentral might have something. after looking on there for a second, i gave up.
If you ask us any question about software, its proable SOMEONE on the boards has is or has a comment about it. we're just as good as some fancy-shmansy review site. :D

MusiciansFriend.com has quite a selection of software. Another good program is Magix. It's less than 100US dollars.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.

Thanks. That has helped some, how much equipment will I need to be able to use these programs? I'm not very familiar with MIDI, but I noticed that some of them mention that as well. Will I need to be set up for that? Thanks for the help so far though.

I have used sonar, protools, wavelab, garage band and Logic and they are all good.
Im currently using Logic pro 7.2 on a G5 and it is great.

IMO all recording software is exactly the same. All recording software relies on the A/D conversion ability of the soundcard you are using. Naturally the better sound card you have the better the results.
Cheap (but still sweet) soundcards would be Audigy series. I suggest one that has not only the PCI card, but also the front panel (think in place of a hard drive) connection.
The differences in the recording software is basically personal preference. Layout, look and feel etc.
bottom line, its not the software its the soundcard.
There are alot of free software that are very nice Audacity seems to be the proggie of choice.
My advice, get the best soundcard you can afford. Get audacity, make you mark.

I disagree.
Why, well the software environment you are using dictates:
work flow,
native plugins,
ability to interface with different bits of kit (i.e. supported control surfaces & I/O),
how the software processes information (DSP card vs CPU cycles i.e. protools HD vs well, the rest of the world) which translates directly to performance and ability to handle plugins / track count before dropouts,
ability to use different plugins (VST vis TDM etc),
ability to handle midi,
Audio formats supported (AFI vs Wav),
ability to handle MP3s / other compression formats,
number of supported midi instruments,
number of supported tracks (many of the freebies will only support 8 tracks etc),
midi sound modules supplied / supported......
and these are just the ones that spring off the top of my head.
To say that a free bit of software is the same as say Logic pro 7 (clocking in at a cool thousand dollars) is just not true.
Converters and clock as well as I/O in general are all important as is mic choice and placement / preamp choice as is ability to monitor and the acoustics of your recording environment. That said a recording will only be as good as the weakest link in the recording chain, and that includes the performance you are capturing and your own abilities as an engineer !
