Hey All:

Not sure if this should be in theory or not.

I have been working on lots of scales lately and I am now wanting to mix up the notes rather than staying in the "box" so to speak.

If I take the Am Pentatonic scale which is typical in most rock songs, whats an easy way to incorporate notes up and down the neck? I have looked at trying to tab out a "sliding" Am Pentatonic Scale and quickly came to the realization that their has to be an easier way to do this.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.
I use heavy strings, tune low, play hard and floor it. Floor it. That's technical talk.

Here's a little run I use, maybe it can help you figure some things out.

Thanks Magic

-- So basically I can play any ACDEG on the fretboard and I am still playing an Am scale? Also, if I am soloing to a song using the Am scale as long as I stay with the root of A I can play any of those notes in any sequence and it should still sound good on the ear?

Cheers!

Yeah pretty much. That's a basic definition of staying in key. You can also use reletive scales that have pretty much the sam notes for even more reach down the fretboard. All you do to find the reletive Major scale to Am is count 3 frets up from the root (A) and viola! Cmaj scale. Then it's vice versa to find the relative minor to any Major scale. Try it out and work with it.

Yes, as long as you play those notes, you`ll be playing an A minor Pentatonic.

Also, if I am soloing to a song using the Am scale as long as I stay with the root of A I can play any of those notes in any sequence and it should still sound good on the ear?

Yes, if the chord progression is consistant with the scale, it`ll sound good.

The best way to play scales all over the fretboard, is to learn them in small patterns. Here is another pattern for the A minor pentatonic.

Second Position:

e--------------------------------------------3---5---
B------------------------------------3---5-----------
G---------------------------2---5--------------------
D-------------------2---5----------------------------
A----------3---5-------------------------------------
E---3---5--------------------------------------------
Someday I`ll play like in my dreams.

try looking up the caged positions for pentatonics - there are 5 interlocking shapes for the pents which allow you to play the same notes all over the neck....

Man you all ROCK!

Thanks so much...waiting for my new amp to arrive so I figured scales where a great way to wait ;)

Better than hacking my away around based on ear.

I think so - I struggle to read things like that, but the Am one is definitely right and the others will just be position shifts, so yeah, I think it's OK.

The main thing to work on is how the shapes fit together - over time it kinda burns into your brain so you just know where you can go from a certain point on the neck without hitting a bum note.

To use the Am one as the example, the third fret position scale is the 'A' shape, fifth fret is 'G', and so on to 'CAGED'. The CAGED thinking repeats in other areas too, so it's worth getting your head around. you'll notice you can build chords and arps with the shapes, and the modal stuff is very similar when you get there too...
